Is joining college societies a waste of time?

During my first year, I was determined to join as many societies as I could. While that goal was a bit overambitious and didn’t last long, I ended up interviewing for nearly every society and joined six: DEBSOC, Ashwamedh, eCell, IGTS, ARES, and IEEE.

Here’s what I gained from these experiences:

1. Networking with Seniors: I connected with many seniors and learned from their experiences—everything from navigating CGPAs and preparing for placements to discovering the best social spots on campus.

2. Building Connections: I met hundreds of my batchmates, engaging with around 300-400 people. It was exciting to meet new faces every day, exchange ideas, and broaden my perspective.

3. Forming Friendships: Through these interactions, I found people who shared similar interests and perspectives, leading to some of my closest friendships.

4. Learning New Skills: Joining these societies taught me valuable skills beyond the classroom. I honed my graphic design abilities, became a more effective debater, and learned how to organize events for thousands of guests.

So, get involved, embrace new experiences, and step out of your comfort zone to make the most of your college life.

I’m honestly a bit jealous of all of you who are still in that carefree first year—it's a time full of fun, growth, and no stress!
