A Brief Overview of the History of AI…
Everyone wants to get ahead and understand AI so they can use it.
But to get the whole picture, it’s helpful to take a step back and consider the history of artificial intelligence.
How did it start before growing into what it is now?
Here’s a brief overview.
Defining AI: Artificial intelligence involves the ability of a computer program to perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence, including factors like:
✅ Problem solving
✅ Decision making
✅ Visual perception
✅ Speech recognition
From there, significant events regarding AI over time include:
1950: Alan Turing proposed his “Turing Test” as a way to measure a machine’s demonstration of human intelligence. For example, if a machine starts a conversation with a human and cannot be detected as a machine, it passes the test.
1956: The Dartmouth Conference was held, which was widely considered to be the birthplace of AI as a field of study
1957: Rosenblatt develops Perceptron, the first artificial neural network capable of learning. Neural networks are machine learning models that mimic the brain, learning to recognize patterns and make connections via artificial neuron connections.
1980s: The technology becomes widely used by companies for financial forecasting and medical diagnoses.
1997: IBM’s Deep Blue defeats chess champion Kasparov, marking the first time a computer beat a world champion in a complex game.
2000 - 2010: The rise of natural language processing and image recognition. Facebook’s DeepFace can recognise faces with near-human accuracy. IBM’s Watson defeats former Jeopardy champions.
2020 - present: Significant progress is made in natural language processing. OpenAI releases GPT-3, leading to the release of ChatGPT. Legal complications arise with regard to AI image generation tools due to their use of Stable Diffusion to remix the copyrighted works of artists worldwide.
