ABCs of Sustainability
🌎
When thinking about sustainability, there are numerous concepts to consider, each carrying its own underlying implications and specific elements. It's easy to focus on just a few key terms, but sustainability is a broad and interconnected field. That's why it's crucial to have a more comprehensive view by understanding the diverse range of concepts that all play a role in driving meaningful change.
This image represents some of the key terms and ideas that come to mind when I think about sustainability. From adaptation and biodiversity to circular economy and decarbonization, each of these concepts contributes to the larger puzzle of how we can create a more sustainable world. Of course, there are many more ideas and practices that could be added, but this serves as a starting point for broadening our understanding.
Understanding these terms isn't just an academic exercise—it's about recognizing how each piece fits into the larger picture of sustainability. Whether it's considering the importance of local sourcing or the impact of renewable energy, each concept has its own significance and practical implications in the real world.
I drew some inspiration for this visual from the work of Nicole Kelner, who created an ABCs of climate change. Her approach helped me think about how to communicate complex topics in a way that's accessible and engaging, and I wanted to create something similar for sustainability.
This image is by no means exhaustive, but I hope it sparks some thought and conversation. There's always more to learn, and I'm looking forward to continuing to expand this list and deepen my understanding of sustainability.
