My parents travelled in general class for most of their lives; even sleeper class used to be a privilege and was reserved for long-distance travel.
Â
As a child, I travelled in general class and always hated how crowded they were; a reserved seat is all I wished for when travelling in a train.
Â
I used to fear TCs (Ticket Checkers) because when the general class was unbearably crowded, we used to sit in sleeper class, and some TCs (not all) treated us rudely as we didn't have a reservation and only a general class ticket. They were doing their job after all.
Â
The fear is so ingrained in me that even today my heart feels heavy seeing a TC even after having a reservation!
Â
Although my parents could afford a sleeper class ticket, they tried to save every penny so I could get a quality education.
Â
While my close cousins were studying in Hindi-medium schools, I studied in a convent.
Â
People today talk about entertainment expenses, outings, and trips; we had none for most of my childhood.
Â
Today, I can comfortably afford a seat in 3 AC, 2 AC, or even a flight based on availability and time.
Â
It took the effort of a generation to switch between the coaches of the very same train!
Â
Had my parents thought of enjoying their life, living in the moment, and didn't plan financially, I could have never achieved whatever little I did.
Â
Our parents generation was
built differently.
