This feels a bit odd to share on LinkedIn, but this is also a gentle reminder that people are more than just their day jobs. Here's a non-work milestone to celebrate. ๐ŸŽ‰

I remember my heart racing and hands trembling when I posted my first-ever video. I also remember crying when I received mean comments for the first time (let's normalize the low times too ๐Ÿ˜…). Now, itโ€™s become such a creative constant in my life and weโ€™ve made it to 50k strong on YouTube!!

Thank you for every comment you've shared. Thank you for watching on day 1 of uploads (apparently that matters a good amount). Thank you for sending my work to your friends. And thank you for rooting me on even when I was going through some tough times. ๐Ÿฅน

I know I've got a lot of mentors, colleagues, and friends of friends here on LinkedIn. I'm doing my best every day to chase my dreams. Hope I make y'all proud!

To the students who came to my โœจ๐™ข๐™–๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™˜๐™ก๐™–๐™จ๐™จโœจ at Carnegie Mellon, I am so sorry I forgot my nice shirt!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Discord and Carnegie Mellon University flew me and my recruiting partner, Chris Johnson, out to Pittsburgh to give a career talk to their Product Management masters program and MBA students!

I talked through my career journey, breaking into product, resume tips, product interviews, how products are shipped, and my career lessons. We jampacked this talk to the brim and shared all of our greatest nuggets. Here are some of my greatest lessons after 8 years in tech:

(+ learn how the money works)
I have a whole YT video on salary negotiations you can check out. But just remember, your first offer is almost always a lowball, people hired after you get paid more, and promotions are really hard to get. Imagine this. What if you get such a good offer that you can actually just focus on your job for the next 2 years instead of worrying about overcompensating to get promoted? Itโ€™s a completely different headspace to have at work.

There will always be setbacks, re-orgs, layoffs, and different company priorities. Eventually, it just might not be a good fit for you, and thatโ€™s okay. The best thing I did for myself was say โ€œnah this ainโ€™t itโ€ and take action to change my circumstance. There are better companies, teams, and projects to work on. I promise.

This is kind of a spicy one, but itโ€™s more relevant when youโ€™re more seasoned. Gunning for promo means sacrificing your evenings/weekends, not taking your vacation or sick days, and taking on tasks that you arenโ€™t part of your job for only a chance of getting paid a little bit more. It also means more scope, meetings, responsibilities, and stress. ๐Ÿ˜”

Execs don't have the time to dive into the level the detail you work with in their day to days. Theyโ€™re making decisions at rapid velocities and rely on your expert opinion to make the right call. At the end of the day, youโ€™re on the hook to deliver. If you disagree with a goal that was set, voice your concerns and propose alternative solutions. Itโ€™s a discussion.

Most of working in industry is exploring uncharted territories, so youโ€™ll always be working on things youโ€™ve never seen before. Get comfortable with learning on the fly and asking good questions. And donโ€™t be afraid to ask the โ€œdumbโ€ questions either - if you didnโ€™t get it, youโ€™re definitely helping out someone else whoโ€™s also too afraid to ask.

For now, Iโ€™m taking my first-ever gap year, hitting up as many creative side quests as possible: launching a pod, singing, and making cinema โœจ

But the future is still undetermined. Iโ€™ve been surprised to discover that the money in tech, content, and startups is all quite compelling. Itโ€™s not as black and white as you may think.

So, letโ€™s talk about it. ๐Ÿต

In our latest episode of the JOMO pod, Eric Wei (Co-Founder of Karat Financial) and I talk about how money influences career decisions and relationships in your 20s and 30s.

โ€œYour salary is the cost of you staying there vs. doing more of what you actually want to do.โ€
There is a base level of income you need to live comfortably, which looks different for everyone. But beyond that, being money motivated can begin to limit rather than enable you.

Weโ€™re trained to conflate net worth with value. โ€œIf I make more money, people will respect me more.โ€ In reality, personal qualities like integrity, reliability, and kindness still make the foundation in building a positive reputation.

Corporate work is (arguable) stable and low-risk, but it can be confining. Doing your own thing is a big financial risk but there are no limits to how quickly and exponentially you grow.

Weโ€™ve all been there - nickel-and-diming Venmo charges over dinners. At some point, itโ€™s not worth the mental accounting when thereโ€™s shared experience to be had. When to draw boundaries with money becomes less clear over time.

I love this episode where Eric and I go deep into the uncomfortable depths of money. Take a listen and let me know what you think! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
