Our Black Latinx Indigenous affinity group hosted The Marcy Lab School for a discussion and networking session to support their early career journeys.

Contributing to our recent Cognizant Synapse initiative to provide job training to one million individuals around the globe, the fellows had an opportunity to hear from a panel of Cognizant’s leaders as they shared early career advice, the benefits of continuous learning and how to lead with passion. Through one-on-one sessions, fellows interacted with mid-level and executive-level leaders that reflected their own background—showing them they have a place at all levels of an organization.

The Marcy Lab School, a Cognizant grantee, is a tuition-free one-year program helping students unlock the skills, habits and network needed to launch a financially-rewarding, purpose-driven career in tech.

Can you tell us how your disability has influenced your personal and professional journey?

🤝 “I sustained this disability just after finishing my graduation which changed my perspective about life, and it also gave me the opportunity to keep moving ahead. I wanted to give back to the society which wholeheartedly backed me at my lowest. At Cognizant, the Unite affinity group is the platform where I can continue to do what I am intrinsically passionate about.”

What are some resources that you’d suggest for people who want to learn more about disability inclusion?

💡 “A disability can be anything – a minor ligament injury, fracture, hearing loss, age associated disabilities, climate triggered breathing issues, arthritis, and many other. Disability inclusion workshops can be key to develop an inclusive culture.”

What is a common word or phrase you’d like to see retired from our language?

📣 “The most fundamental aspect of disability inclusive communication is identity. I prefer the term ‘Person with disability’ rather than being called ‘disabled’.”

Tell us about the impact of disability inclusion in the workplace.

📈 “If demand for employees with disabilities will increase, it will automatically put pressure on the education system to get more accessible and inclusive. Parents of kids with disabilities will get encouraged to educate their children to make them eligible to work for Cognizant and other such organizations.”

The future is undeniably tech-focused. Through the Synapse initiative, our vision is to build future-ready professionals trained to leap forward with cutting-edge technologies like Generative AI. Cognizant reports Q4 and full year 2023 results:

🔹 Full-year revenue of $19.4 billion declined 0.4% year-over-year
🔹 Full-year operating margin of 13.9% 
🔹 Full-year operating cash flow of $2.3 billion
🔹 Trailing 12-month bookings of $26.3 billion, up 9% year-over-year
🔹 $1.7 billion returned to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends in 2023
🔹 Cash dividend increased 3% to $0.30 per share for Q1 2024
