Do you use questions in arguments?
We often come at people with information.
Is it any coincidence that
We very rarely change their minds?
We very rarely change our minds?
Or that we very rarely find common ground?
Over my years at MIT, Duke and through my research on behavioral economics and psychology,
I have learned this one incredibly effective technique to help change the opinions of other people.
It's not with information, but with a few key questions
The first questions you can ask are questions to reduce confidence.
How well do you think you understand a toilet?
Well what if I gave you all the pieces and asked you to put one together?
People will often think they have an understanding of an issue, but question them on how it would work.
The second questions would be questions to slow people down.
Put the work into the issue they care about and ask for more complex responses.
The third questions are meant to put people in an empathetic state.
When I say “win an argument“, what I mean is how can we solve problems together
Put people into the perspective of people most affected by the situation.
Change the tone.
Open the conversation.
