I crossed 2,000,000 followers. I want to return the favour. Here is how:

There are many of you who need more followers.

If you are job searching, recruiting, want to grow your business, build your personal brand or just want to support jobseekers.

It's simple.

I INTERVIEWED an exiting employee, and here are 5 insights I would like to share with you:

1. Mental resignation happens long before. The physical resignation is the final act of a loss of hope.
2. You can’t try to appreciate someone on their way out. It is a little too late.
3. Money motivates only to a point. People rarely leave just for money.
4. Career progression is one of the biggest factors to retention. Every job plateaus. Create a career path for each employee to ensure they stay motivated.
5. Once trust is broken, it's hard to regain.

Your employees are your most valuable asset. Don't take them for granted or treat them poorly. Loyalty is a two-way street.
I was on a HIRING committee where the CEO didn't like any of the candidates interviewed. He said none of them met his criteria. We clashed on this and I told him that person does not exist. There is no 'perfect' employee.

He ignored my suggestions and the position remained vacant for 4 months. Long story, short...He finally hired someone who had all the qualifications he wanted. This guy had quite an impressive resume! But sadly he did not perform well. He was 'PERFECT' on paper but did not have good people skills.

Qualifications are important but so is soft skills. A perfect resume does not equate to success on the job. Sadly many hiring managers and recruiters ignore these 2 major factors - 'PASSION & POTENTIAL'. A candidate may not tick every box on your checklist, but they may be the ones who can bring so much value to the organization. Agree?

Employee to HR: I am giving 2 weeks of notice. I want to move on.

HR: You know , we don't need you anymore. Today is your last day.

I have seen this many times. Too often when an employee resigns, and it seems the company has no use for them, they are treated poorly. You can pretty much tell the values of a company by how they treat 1. Jobseekers and 2. Those leaving. It's time to put back the “Human“ in Human Resources. NO WAY!!! My candidate had a 5 year GAP in her resume. After she interviewed with the client: The feedback I got from them was very disappointing. “Your applicant presented herself very well and seems qualified, but 5 years OFF is a long time, we can’t take that RISK.“

“OFF”? She had taken the “break” to be a stay-at-home mom when her first child was born. In addition, she was assisting her aging parents. She did not hide this on her resume. She wrote “professional sabbatical to care of my family.“

AND she explained all of this during the job interview.

“RISK”? This is an excellent candidate who kept her skills up to date. Yet all my client could see was the gap. A gap in employment history should not discount someone’s abilities.

Shouldn't a GAP in employment be expected at some point in one's career? If a candidate has the right skills and attitude to do the job, shouldn’t that be enough?
A ship engine failed, NO ONE could fix it.
Then they brought in a man with 40 yrs. on the job.
He inspected the engine carefully.
Then reached into his bag & pulled out a small hammer.
He gently tapped a spot.
Immediately, the engine rocked into life. It was fixed!
7 Days later, the owners got his bill for $10,000.
'What?!' the owners exclaimed.
'He scarcely did anything.'
They asked for an itemized bill.
His response:
”Tapping with a hammer = $2
Knowing where to tap = $9,998“
Lesson: Don't Ever Underestimate Experience!

A BAD BOSS is one of the most destructive forces a company can have. They may get temporary results, but they leave a trail of destruction in their path. Micromanaging, pointing fingers, and throwing employees under the bus is an absolute morale and productivity killer. Too many bosses treat employees like they can use them, and then discard them to hire someone better. Little do they know, they are only hurting themselves and the company. The job of a manager is to set people up to succeed. Sadly, some managers see best people as a threat to their own position so they withhold proper tools, support and the necessary information which sets people up to fail. The fastest way to destroy a company is to create a toxic culture of tearing others down. Build up the employee and you build up the company. “We rise by lifting others.“ Agree?

I quit my job for a lower-paying job. Although the pay was less in my new job, my new manager was great. I did not dread going to work everyday. A total contrast, to previously working for a toxic boss who micromanaged me. A bad boss can make your work life miserable. In the end, no amount of money can replace peace of mind, or having a supportive boss.

ME: Candidate accepted another offer.
CLIENT: I thought she really liked our company.
ME: Yes, she did
CLIENT: I don’t understand why she would throw away a great future here.
ME: She is very talented. She will have a great future wherever she chooses.
CLIENT: But we’re #1 in our space!

Companies need to realize interviews are two-way streets. You are not only choosing the candidate, the candidate is choosing you as well. While you are taking 3+ months to hire someone (looking for perfection) putting candidates through multiple interviews and tests - another company recognized her worth and made her an offer far above the market range. If you want the best talent improve your hiring processes. Candidates have negotiating power too.

Don't just QUIT your JOB the moment someone offers you a better salary. Research your new boss, the people and the culture. No amount of money can compensate for a toxic work culture. The truth is, the grass is not always greener on the other side. I learned this the hard way. If an organization has a high turnover rate, or there are always vacancies for the same position. Beware. WRONG DECISION!
Many companies keep treating employees poorly because they think they will not leave. People just want to feel valued, appreciated and heard. Once employees decide they have had enough, they will leave in spite of the money or perks. It would be a little too late. Never push loyal employees to the point where they no longer care! Agree?

What is MISSING in the Recruiting/ Hiring process?

A HEART!

Many recruiters treat jobseekers like they are at a shopping mall. There is no “perfect“ candidate. Quit wasting everyone's time searching for this. It's not just applicants but PEOPLE you are dealing with.

Job searching can be emotionally draining. Put yourself in the candidates' shoes. Get back to them quickly with feedback. Don't leave candidates hanging. Grant them closure. We all at one point were jobseekers, and it doesn't take much for anyone of us to be a jobseeker again. A little EMPATHY and RESPECT goes a long way. Let's make the recruiting process more HUMANE!

My new employee asked me one day for time off. I immediately approved it. She was shocked and asked, “Don’t you want to know the reason why?” My reply was, “I don't need to know the details. I hired you to get the job done and I trust you to get it done.”

You choose how to get your work done. Come to the office fine. 9 to 5? Fine. Work from home. Fine. Leave early. Fine. Work from the garage while they fix your car? Fine.

We are all human. I don't need to know you will be late because of a doctor's appointment, or you are leaving early to attend a personal matter.

It's sad how we have infantilized the workplace so much, that employees feel the need to apologize for having personal lives. I am not a clock watcher. I trust you to get your job done. Keep clients happy. I am happy.
A 4 year degree attained after 7 years is still a degree. A graduation at 50 is still a graduation. A business started at 65 is still a business. It's okay to run at your own pace and it's okay to start over. Don’t let people confine you with their timelines of success. You are very much on time.

Great leadership isn’t about control. It’s about empowering people! Sadly, many managers don’t get this and prefer to micromanage employees. A manager's job is to provide guidance and support. It's facilitating a healthy environment where employees can perform at their best. If you hired someone for a job, you don't need to be monitoring their every movement!

The biggest factor in whether you succeed or fail at work is... your boss. If your boss doesn't like you it's a losing battle. They can easily set you up to fail. If you worked under a bad boss you will truly understand this. A Good boss is better than a good company!

STOP calling jobseekers over 40, “Overqualified.“ What does that even mean? Don’t you want the best person for the job? You would never say that about your doctor, mechanic, or airline pilot. Overqualified is really code word for ageism. Equal employment opportunity should not be for some but all. It's time to stop discrimination based on a person's age. There are so many in this position which is a waste of knowledge, experience and talent!

“Please, I can't breathe, Mama Mama.“ Today my heart is heavy. George Floyd was brutally murdered as a policeman knelt on his neck on the side of the road for at least 7 minutes. This has been happening for too long. It's now being seen because of technology. Someone doesn’t deserve a death sentence because of the color of their skin. We’re all humans and deserve to be treated fairly. Please don’t say silent. We need to discuss this in our workplaces, in our homes. Stand against racism. You don't have to be black to support fairness and humanity. It's time for change.
My condolences to his family. RIP. #GeorgeFloyd

Toxic company cultures always lack this one thing: Empathy! When a leader lacks empathy, people are left feeling unappreciated and unvalued. If you want to build relationships with your employees and increase engagement and loyalty - Show that you genuinely care. Employees want to be treated like human beings and not as objects. They have feelings, emotions, and personal lives. Sometimes it’s the little things you do that counts the most. The kind word, the thoughtful gesture, the much needed support... Empathy is the most important leadership skill needed today! Agree?

Surround yourself with people who see the greatness in you even if you don't see it yourself. People who believe in you and will push you to reach higher. Many of us have stifled our dreams because of doubtful and negative people around us. When this pandemic has subsided, keep social distancing from negativity. “Iron sharpens iron.” It’s time to soar higher. Time to become the leader you were destined to be.

One of the top reasons employees leave a company is the lack of development opportunities. Leadership is about genuinely caring for your team, being committed to their professional development and creating a supportive and engaging culture. By providing employees with the opportunity to grow, we help them become more valuable members of the team and company. When employees grow, the company also grows. It's a total win-win situation! Leadership is about people - full stop! If you don't have a passion for people, you have no business leading them. Too often I hear managers say, “I am not running a charity. It's a business I have to run.“ Yes, but it's people you are leading. Be in leadership to inspire, motivate and empower others. The best leaders build people up versus tear them down. If you want employee loyalty start treating everyone with respect regardless of their status or job title! Agree?

You can’t buy employee loyalty; You must earn it! Building an organization of committed, loyal employees ultimately comes down to demonstrating to employees that the company deserves their loyalty. Employees want to be heard, valued, respected and they want opportunities for growth and advancement. If you keep treating employees poorly, you will never earn their loyalty. Are you feeling depressed or having suicidal thoughts? If you had a headache or a cold, you would instantly get medicine or visit the doctor. So please talk to someone. Get professional help. As a society we have put too much emphasis on the physical but it's the mind which is more important. Your psychological state can distort your perspective on life. Negative thinking leads us to focus on the worst aspects or possible outcomes of a situation. Think positive. In this pandemic, we are losing too much people to suicide. Take care of your mental health. You are important. You matter. Things will work out for you. Keep going. Don't give up. 😊\n\n#mentalhealth #COVID19 #Motivation
Great leaders drive positive cultures. They focus on solutions. They inspire people to see what's possible. Bad bosses on the other hand, will take a good staff and destroy it, causing the best employees to flee and the remainder to lose all motivation. They foster cultures of fear, negativity and distrust. When great leaders are at the helm, team spirit soars. They build people up versus tear them down. Agree?

Leadership is not about position or power. Many managers get enthralled with the control and authority which comes with positional power. Rather than making people better off, they leave a trail of destruction in their path. A title doesn't make you a leader. It's your impact and influence.
