Shortly after I qualified as a #GP someone I know made the following cutting and unpleasant remark to me...
“So you just want to see coughs and colds all day? Its such a shame you didn't decide to specialise in anything proper.“
At the time my #selfesteem was low and this comment cut very deeply and sat with me for a long time. I had a choice - I could let their comment sit with me, bring me down and consume all of my energy. Or I could ignore them, keep my focus, self-belief and motivation.
I chose the second path.
It's been over 5 years since I finished my GP training. Within the last month alone I have supported and treated patients in their final days of life, helped people through mental health crises and diagnosed and supported patients living with cancer. I have vaccinated children, dressed wounds and seen the occasional cough and cold too. I have the immense privilege of being referred patients from all over the country for my expert opinion. I look forward to work every day and couldn't be more proud of my career choice.
Don't let anyone define you with their misjudgements.
