Twenty years ago, our European family grew 🇪🇺🎉

On 1 May 2004, citizens of 🇨🇾 Cyprus, 🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, 🇸🇮 Slovenia became EU citizens.

Since then, two more enlargements have taken place, solidifying our European unity.

The EU is now the world's largest integrated market, boosting trade and economic growth for its countries, while also offering citizens rights and opportunities aligned with shared European values.

Enlargement is a success story.
The EU is stronger today because of the inclusion of new countries, and each country is better off thanks to EU membership.

More than 34,000 EU-funded scholarships have been awarded to the best-ranked candidates, covering participation costs, and contributing to travel, visa, and a living allowance.

In these 20 years, students and staff across the globe have brought Erasmus Mundus to where it is today.

#UseYourVote to stand for democracy.

The EU elections take place between 6–9 June 2024. Your vote will decide which Members of the European Parliament will represent you in preparing new EU laws.

Democracy should never be taken for granted. It is a collective achievement – and it is a collective responsibility in which we all have a role.

Every vote counts. Don’t let others decide for you, use your vote.

Exactly five years ago today, the EU-supported Event Horizon Telescope captured the first-ever image of a black hole.

Two years thereafter, we got this image – much clearer than before.

This year, we celebrate 40 years of 🇪🇺 our research and innovation programmes, with these milestones:

🧪 More than €283 billion invested in research, including €95.5 billion for 2021 to 2027;
👨‍🔬 More than 100 EU-funded projects supported for over €200 million during the pandemic;
🏆 More than 30 Nobel prizes won by EU-funded researchers, including seven in just the last four years.

From helping research and roll-out vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, to space research, supercomputers and rare diseases, we have made the EU a global leader in science.

In fact, research and innovation play a key role in all our priorities including the European Green Deal and Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

We invest in science. For a better future for us all.

The EU is everywhere around you.
On the highway you drive.
Over the bridge you pass.
On the train you take.

The Cohesion Policy supports infrastructure investments in EU countries with a lower income per person. It has enabled faster connections between people and boosted a greener, low-carbon and circular economy.

EU rights are very tangible rights we all rely on an everyday basis. 🇪🇺🫶

To mark the 30th anniversary of EU citizenship, we presented a package of measures to strengthen citizens' rights in all 27 EU countries. Here's what it includes:

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Updated guidance on EU free movement rules. Key points covered include beneficiaries, entry rights, and residence, with a focus on rainbow families.

♿ Key measures in this package promote inclusiveness and equal opportunities in elections, including a guide to electoral procedures for citizens with disabilities.

🗳️ As we move into the digital age, new e-voting procedures, a component of this package, will enhance voting rights and make it easier for citizens to exercise their rights across the EU.

📊 The Eurobarometer on citizenship and democracy reports that 87% of citizens feel connected to EU citizenship. They are well-informed about their rights, with significant support for free movement and recognition of economic advantages.

🗃️ The European Citizens' Initiative Report highlights the progress made since 2020 revision of the regulation, reflecting the joint efforts to improve citizens' participation in EU democracy.

Mark your calendars for the European elections from 6 to 9 June 2024! For an inclusive Europe with informed, engaged and empowered citizens.

🛰️ 🛰️ Satellite data can now be used to detect marine litter from space.

By analysing images taken by the Copernicus satellites, scientists have managed to acquire an unprecedented view of the emissions and accumulation areas of marine litter.

They identified thousands of patches of floating litter, also called “windrows” in the Mediterranean Sea, ranging from a few hundred metres to 20 kilometres long.

Improved monitoring can help pinpoint the most polluted areas and help identify its main sources.

This can help facilitate clean-up operations, making our oceans cleaner for us all.

The European Union is proud of being an open democracy. But democracy needs protection.

The Defence of Democracy package we presented today will help us achieve it.

🛡️ A newly proposed directive will better shield us from foreign interference by mandating transparency, including:
➡ introducing national Transparency Registers of entities carrying out interest representation;
➡ requiring public access to key elements in them;
➡ ensuring record keeping of such activities.

🗳️ We have provided recommendations to EU countries to promote free, fair, and resilient elections by promoting high democratic standards for elections and ensuring inclusive participation.

📣 We can all play a crucial role in our democracy. New recommendations to EU countries will encourage predictable, accessible, transparent, and inclusive ways to make citizens and civil society part of democratic policymaking.

Today we all see that we must fight for our democracies. Every single day.

Let's do it, together.

Together, we can bring Ukraine closer to our Union 🇪🇺 🤝 🇺🇦.

In 2022, just a few days after Russia launched its full-scale unjustified and unprovoked invasion, Ukraine applied for EU membership.

And in that same year, in a historic vote, EU countries granted Ukraine a candidate status.

Since then and despite the ongoing war, Ukraine has made progress on several strands, including:
🔹 reforming its justice system,
🔹 tackling money laundering,
🔹 reforming the judicial governance bodies.

From day one, Europe opened its door to Ukrainians. They now have access to EU programmes for research, innovation and education through Horizon Europe and Erasmus.

In a further step toward integration, the country has also signed an association agreement to join the Single Market programme and the Connecting Europe Facility.

Ukrainians are fighting for a better future.
And Europe will be with them every step of the way.
