Meet Abdullah Ahmed: a medical student and software engineering intern bridging his passion for computer science, mathematics, and medicine. Over the past few months, Abdullah has been interning on our Google Health AI team, where he’s focused on helping clinicians responsibly use AI. “My current work involves developing tools to help physicians grasp the intricate evolution of a patient’s medical condition, and ensuring our models prioritize clinical safety in every application,” Abdullah explained.

Abdullah’s journey to his internship was marked by a diverse range of interests and motivations. “After studying computer science in undergrad, I decided to pursue an MD because I was drawn to medicine's direct impact on people's lives, and I wanted to apply my analytical skills to complex human challenges.” For anyone interested in following a similar path, Abdullah recommends being open to exploring all of your passions. “Combining computer science and medicine has helped me think outside the box, especially when tackling tough challenges in healthcare. I believe exploring diverse interests, even if seemingly unrelated, is so powerful.”

ADCOLOR 2024 — a conference celebrating the contributions of people of color working in tech and media — wrapped up last week in Los Angeles! Each year, the conference identifies people of color who’ve gone above and beyond to make a difference in the world of marketing and technology. This year, 6 Googlers were nominated for awards: Maryam Ikuforiji (product marketing manager), Layla Jawad (product marketing manager), Debby Erazo (product marketing manager), Gia Cummings (account manager), Olivia Hoeft (marketing manager), and Adrienne Hayes (VP of global subscriptions & customer growth marketing).

While the specifics of each Googlers’ accomplishments vary, they all worked to promote diverse perspectives into their work. “I collaborate with teams across Google and YouTube to showcase diverse narratives and perspectives on our social media platforms,“ Debby explained. “This involves highlighting a wide range of stories, from exciting new local businesses featured on our Google Small Business channels to celebrating the achievements of diverse creators on our YouTube Advertisers handles. By leveraging the reach of Google products, we can amplify these voices and contribute to a more inclusive and representative online space.“

Congratulations to all of Google’s ADCOLOR 2024 nominees!

As we kick off Black History Month 2023, we’re preparing for a month of commemoration, celebration, and reflection. Throughout February, we’ll be highlighting projects across the company that are helping us build more equitable products and communities. First on this list is a new feature launched on Google Assistant, in partnership with Google Arts & Culture. If you have a Google Assistant nearby, try saying: “OK Google, happy Black History Month.” Your Assistant will then give a description of a Black artist or trailblazer, with the ultimate goal of exposing people to erased histories and amplifying the works of Black educators, activists, and artists.

Last month at our Google Sandbox Nairobi event, he shared with our participants his career journey and Google’s 15-years of Engineering in Africa.

Meet Kathrin and her team. Kathrin's career journey spans from academia to Google for Education leadership. As a Director of Engineering, she guides teams building products like Google Classroom and Read Along, with an extra focus on infrastructure, safety and data insights. “We place a big emphasis on working as a team,” she says, adding, “On a daily basis, our engineers improve our product by writing code, designing new features or a better architecture to make our product scale.”

“For example, we allow teachers to give and grade assignments in Classroom, and at the same time build analytics and insights off of them. This can help teachers understand what material the students have mastered and what they still need to focus on.”

Her team’s recent expansion into Mexico City highlights the chance to make a meaningful difference in the region. “I love that I can work with an incredible team and apply my skills to an area I care so much about, and that impacts millions of students, teachers and education leaders around the world,” she says.
