5 business lessons I learned from my dad (a self-made millionaire):
My dad didn’t always have money.
I remember picking blueberries one summer to sell so we could go on a camping trip.
But in 1998 my dad opened a landscaping company with a lawn mower and beat up truck.
Today, he owns the premiere landscape installation company for all RaceTracs, Dollar Generals, and several other major chains in the Southeast.
Here’s how he got there:
5. Diversification
Dad started with landscaping. Then branched out into real estate & meter reading for the city.
4. Answer the Phone
My dad answers his phone when it rings 100/100 times during business hours.
3. Hire for Weaknesses
My dad hired a book keeper before he could really afford one. He’s always had a CPA. In the last few years, he’s hired his replacement and several other key managers to run systems so he can spend more time on the golf course.
2. Keep Your Word
If my dad says he’ll be there Tuesday, unless the earth implodes, he’ll be there Tuesday.
And if something unavoidable comes up, he doesn’t beat around the bush or delay communication because he’s afraid to make someone upset.
He’s direct, honest, and prompt.
1. Work Harder than Anyone Else
My dad has outgrown others in his field who are more credentialed and were better equipped starting out.
How?
He out-worked them.
He’s my very best friend, mentor, and cheerleader!
