If you can master this one skill as a leader, you can master just about anything else.
What is that one skill? It's Emotional Intelligence or EQ.
Since working with leaders and their teams in 1993 when I was the head of the Design Service Line for an IT Consulting firm to consulting today with Fortune 500 companies to startups across many industries and countries, one thing remains the same:
ā”ļø Nothing can or will change unless Self-Awareness exists.
Self-Awareness starts with the recognition that something is no longer working and needs to change. It's about being willing to take a hard look at the impact your style, words and behavior have on others. And when the impact is negative, to be willing to shift.
This was reinforced yet again as I had a conversation this morning with a colleague of mine at the VP level who has been interviewing for a job for almost 6 months and turned down loads of offers because the leaders lacked emotional intelligence.
The pandemic and now the Great Resignation had shined a bright light on outdated leadership models like Command & Control and leaders who are not willing to listen to how their employees are doing, what they truly need and what they desire.
EQ requires being willing to stop, ask some powerful questions to your employees and then genuinely listen. If you truly want to create an incredible culture that people want to work in, the big question to ask yourself is....
ā”ļø How willing am I to stop, ask some powerful questions of others and then genuinely listen?
Willingness is the first step to EQ.
If you want to know how to master the other steps, I invite you to join the Leadership Lab where you work alongside other leaders to master these skills and loads of others. To learn more about the Lab, go here: https://lnkd.in/dPEnBBt3 or see link in the comment.
Willingness is the first step to change anything in your work or life.
Are you willing to explore that for yourself?
