Marks and Spencer have introduced a “may take a little longer” till for customers who may have limited interaction with other people and those who may want/need a chat.

It gives them a chance to chat to staff without being rushed.

Loneliness can affect people in different ways, and many in our society can go for days without speaking to anyone.

A beautiful initiative, that goes a long way to help people feel a little less alone.

Well done, M&S 👏🏻

Hi, I’m Jen and I’m a lawyer.

I’m also very sensitive and can get emotional easily. I cry more than the average person (including sometimes at work - a moving witness statement is guaranteed to see me tear up). I become emotionally invested in my cases.

Throughout my life, people who don’t know me, have made off the cuff remarks telling me that I need to toughen up to succeed.

But I don’t and I won’t. I’m proud to be in touch with my emotions and most of all I’m unapologetically and unreservedly myself.

I’m Jen, and I’m a lawyer but I’m also human, who is at times emotional and is very empathetic and that makes me the lawyer I am.

7 months ago, Sarvjeet Singh Bhuller reached out to me on LinkedIn.

Sarvjeet is a career changer. He moved from India and became a postman, before realising that his real passion lies in law. He self funded all his legal studies including his LLB through the Open University and he completed the LPC-LLM in February 2021, all while working as a postman. He currently works 6 days a week and is a voluntary legal assistant to get more experience as he has struggled to break into the legal profession.

Sarvjeet’s message and story was incredibly inspiring and when I shared it on LinkedIn (with his consent) it was viewed over half a million times with hundreds of people offering assistance.

I stayed in contact with him as I was very keen to follow his journey. I’m delighted that he recently agreed to be my GROW MENTORING mentee and we had our first mentoring session last night. Here we are in the second picture ☺️

7 months on, Sarveet is still experiencing the struggle that many aspiring lawyers come up against when they are seeking to break into the legal profession. However, I’m not worried about him getting there as his determination and tenacity is clear for all to see. He sacrificed so much including an unpaid years sabbatical to complete the LPC whilst throughout supporting his family.

I can’t wait to work with him more. In the meantime, if you know of or have an Training Contract or paralegal with a view to Training Contract vacancies in the Derby area, please do get in touch with Sarveet.

Watch this space for more updates re our mentoring journey together!
