I got asked to reduce my prices by a prospective client the other week. It's a fair question and there's nothing wrong with looking to have the best commercial relationship possible so in exchange I asked him why he felt he was going to be a valuable enough client to warrant a 15% discount.

He couldn't answer me.

I asked him if he would drop his prices by 15% for his clients, especially if they couldn't tell him why as a business owner that there would be mutual commercial benefit.

He got a bit shirty with me. Claimed it was “different for him“ because “he had a proper business, not just some small company working out of a spare room.“

Well now.

I thanked him for his time, but told him we weren't a match because he wasn't the sort of client I would want to work with. Anyone who talks down a small business because they're small without having anything to add in exchange will never respect you or be a valuable client.

If I dial back to when I first started out, I might have tried to make that relationship work because I'd have thought “well, it's money.“

Having now worked with (and sacked!) a few clients like that... it's taught me that not all money is made equal. #smallbusiness #respect #business #entrepreneurship

£30k a year & 13 weeks annual leave - pure greed & selfishness from the teachers 🙄

Hmmm. Naw. Not exactly true now, is it?

Teachers’ salaries fell by an average of 11 percent between 2010-2022 according to the institute for Fiscal Studies. That’ll explain why nearly a 3rd of teachers qualified in the last decade have left.

But it’s not all about money as the media overlords would have you believe.

- Reliance on non-specialist teachers due to recruitment struggles.

- School textbooks falling to pieces due to a lack of funding.

- Often 10-15 hours a week of work unpaid at home with marking & lesson planning.

Understaffed. Underpaid. Overworked.

Aye, you might have a wee inconvenience for a couple days. But let’s not forget who this will also benefit. YOUR children.

YOUR children are missing out due to the lack of teachers.
YOUR children are missing out due to cuts in funding & resources.
YOUR children are missing out on a great education system that will set them up for the future.

1 in 4 children in the UK are living in poverty. That’s 27%. 2 f*ckin 7.

If the government can afford to p*ss £2bn up the wall with their dodgy dealings, they can afford to pay those who care for & educate the next generation what they deserve.

What do you think?
