Today is the anniversary of me being called to a 7am meeting, told we were merging with another group company and then being shown an org chart of the new leadership team which did not have my name in the HR box.
I never found out why they selected the Head of HR from the other company instead of me, but within 2 days I had lost nearly all of my direct reports and half of my responsibilities. 4 months later, I was let go.
Roll forward to now and I know they did me a favour. Not only am I professionally happier and more fulfilled, but by experiencing first hand what leadership, communication and culture should not look like, I am much better placed now to advise others.
The following points are so important, but sadly often missed:
* Your employees are all individuals. Never treat them like a number and always treat them with dignity and respect.
* Own your difficult decisions and don’t be afraid to share tough messages. Back them up with examples or feedback rather than saying nothing.
* Some empathy, or at least a basic understanding of the likely impact of the decision on the employee receiving it, goes a long way.
What have you all learned first hand that has shaped your advice to or dealings with others?
