As world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly this week – coinciding with Climate Week NYC – the global transition to a green economy is one of the most important issues on the agenda. We know what we have to do to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change – achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The question is how. In this essay, I talk about why governments, investors and philanthropic organizations must come together to create new models of financing clean technologies, and why BlackRock, along with other leading global companies, are joining the Breakthrough Energy Catalyst Program to bring down the green premium.

Earlier today, I had the pleasure of joining many of the leaders driving BlackRock’s growth in speaking to our shareholders at our 5th Investor Day. Since our founding 33 years ago, we’ve constantly evolved BlackRock to stay ahead of our clients’ needs so that we can better serve them and all our stakeholders. We’ve continually challenged the status quo, and the investments we’ve made over time have helped us build a diverse, resilient and global asset management and technology platform.
