Hiring Manager: We would like to offer your candidate $78k for the sales position.

Recruiter: As discussed, they are looking for something that starts with an 8.

Hiring Manager: It's the highest we will go.

Recruiter: How much does the average sales person generate for you?

Hiring Manager: Over 20k per month.

Recruiter: So you're saying when this falls through for 2k it'll really cost you at least 20k in revenue?

Hiring Manager: What do you mean?

Recruiter: It'll actually cost you about 30k...

Hiring Manager: What do you mean?

Recruiter: The hidden costs of starting this search over again are roughly in the 30k range. If no one is doing the job, the company isn't making money. If you're busy interviewing new candidates, you're not doing parts of your job.

Hiring Manager: Well when you say it like that...

Recruiter: It's always like that.

Moral of the story: Trying to cut corners on salary is a short term gain that will cost long term pain.

It's really simple math companies are not doing.

Let's normalize providing some type of update on Monday's to candidates that interviewed last week.

At no point should a candidate ever go more than 5 days without knowing where they stand in your process.

Do better.

Not sure who needs to hear this but you have a better chance of getting a 50 year old to stick around for 10 years than a 20 year old.

If longevity is what you’re looking for, look at the most experienced workers.

Career Advice: Do NOT talk poorly of your former employer in an interview or on social media.

Last week, we lost a candidate in an interview process because of something they wrote on social media about their former employer. It completely shot down the industry as well.

Instead do this……

Talk about what future employers can do better without referencing it being something that wasn’t happening where you were before.

Things can always get better but it’s how you advocate for it that matters too.
