âThis is a suicide mission.â
Thatâs what I said to my wife, Johanna, while reading about Greta Thunberg and a crew of 12 setting out on a flotilla to deliver aid to Gaza.
She paused, looked at me, and said:
âThey all are.â
The students risking their degrees and futures by speaking out.
The doctors in Gaza operating without supplies or sleep.
The journalists documenting truth with targets on their backs.
The aid workers buried beneath the rubble.
Usârisking our reputations and careers with every post that dares to call for humanity.
All of it. A suicide mission.
Intentionally doing what's rightâtruly rightâcan cost you everything.
Your job. Your safety. Your reputation. Your future.
And thatâs the point.
Because when the world becomes this indifferent to sufferingâ
When telling the truth becomes an act of rebellionâ
When saving lives gets you punished while taking them earns applauseâ
Then the only moral choice is to risk everything.
To stay silent is to be complicit.
To stay neutral is to protect privilege at the expense of the powerless.
Neutrality in the face of oppression isnât neutrality. Itâs permission.
You may not be able to stop it.
But if you donât tryâyouâre allowing it.
And across faiths, the message has always been clear:
⊠Christianity
âSpeak up for those who cannot speak for themselves⊠defend the rights of the poor and needy.â
(Proverbs 31:8â9)
âGreater love has no one than this: to lay down oneâs life for oneâs friends.â
(John 15:13)
⊠Judaism
âDo not stand idly by while your neighborâs blood is shed.â
(Leviticus 19:16)
âLearn to do good; seek justice, correct oppressionâŠâ
(Isaiah 1:17)
⊠Islam
âO you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allahâeven though it be against yourselves, your parents, or your kinâŠâ
(Qurâan 4:135)
âWhoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; and if he cannot, then with his heart.â
(Prophet Muhammad, Sahih Muslim)
So yes, it may be a suicide mission.
But maybe the only way to save our humanityâ
is to be willing to lose everything else.
This isn't just about Gaza.
This is about all injustice, everywhere.
