Many were upset that Virat Kohli chose to stay with his wife Anushka for the delivery of their child rather than play in the India-Australia series.
They compared him to Siraj who decided to stay in the tour after his father's death and also with Gavaskar and Natarajan who couldn't meet their newborn babies because of being on tours.
My humble submission is that we need to look at the other side — what Virat is trying to message with this action. Traditionally, in most cultures, taking care of babies has been purely the mother's responsibility. Luckily of late, as more and more women are being empowered and the relationship is becoming more equal, this incredibly unfair practice has been undergoing changes. Men have started becoming more supportive of their wives through pregnancy and after delivery. They take on chores such as warming milk, feeding the baby, changing and washing diapers, putting the baby to sleep etc. This is an important step in gender equality. By taking time off from an incredibly important series (and we know how competitive he is) to be there for his wife, Virat has role-modelled what the modern male should do. He isn't irresponsible. As an icon, he is trying to send an important message to his fans. Remember he is a cricketer not a soldier. #AUSvsIND
