What’s the ROI of a Gigafactory?

Is it truly a commercial proposition, or is the China story to date an illustration of state Intervention rather than market forces producing the required outcome?…

Would you commit a bundle of billlions into a battery factory with only slim pickings in prospect?

I genuinely ask these questions as I absolutely don’t know the answers - so if you do I’d love you to educate myself and many others please!

In the meantime, as Visual Capitalist recently suggest, the average cost of a lithium-ion battery has declined by 89% since 2010. Imagine it’s now 2030…what will the battery BOM price look like at that time - and whatever it is, what impact will it be having on the Cleantech energy and mobility revolutions I wonder?

Europe's Battery Landscape as it is...

Hot on the heels of my previous post - in conversation with Tom Einar Jensen - where he shared his thoughts with me on the dynamics of the european gigfactory gestation - here's the current state of play according to CIC...

It's a 'front of house' picture of course, and the 'back of house' story is much more interesting in terms of funding, supply chain, workforce, and ultimately - customers!

Tom suggested many will come but few will survive.

An extraordinarily complex choreography will be required to get the timing right between supply and demand within the continent so the next few years will be hugely challenging, and inevitably only the strongest will survive.
