A major skill in networking and building relationships is communication. I receive 10-15 messages everyday in my LinkedIn inbox where very few are well written and well-approached.
People in general either hesitate to talk about what they intend to or they are plain ignorant of the fact that LinkedIn is not a chat room where anyone would respond to your broken pieces of messages (hi, hello, how r u, r u busy...??).
What would you do if you had to write a letter to someone and had to post it through a courier service? Would you still write simply 'hi' and wait for the other person to reply you back after he/she receives your courier? Imagine the days and money wasted in all this. Similar is the case here.
Your message to your LinkedIn connection should be precise, concise and direct. Let the other person know in your first message, why are you contacting them? Then wait for next 24 hours for other person to respond back. Take a polite follow up instead of sending messages blaming them on not responding.
You need to understand that communicating with a connection on social media for professional purposes takes a different approach and this approach is called Professionalism.
