⨠A few years back, I had an offer to join a very popular company in London.
The offer and the company was good but what was even better was the location â London! This was in the pre-pandemic world and a job offer would need you to move to that city. I had gone for a vacation to London the year before that and I felt an unusual deja-vu kind of attachment with the city. I don't feel the same for every place I visit.
From my research, I figured out that the pace of my growth and learning would probably be faster in India, given the nature of market we are in, but I wasn't sure. Of course, the quality of life would be better in London since its a more developed place after all.
One part of me desperately wanted to try out the new opportunity in the new city, where as the other part was gravely worried about my professional growth. There were a multitude of âWhat ifâs popping in my mind.
Finally, I decided to discuss this matter with my manager, Srinath, not in a manager-reportee conversation, but more like friend seeking advice. I always looked up to him like an elder brother, a person I can reach out to, no matter what.
Srinath and I went to the cafeteria and discussed the matter over coffee. He listened to the whole matter, including my thoughts and fears, raptly. I opened up completely in front of him because I knew that no one other than him would be able to give me a better professional advice.
After listening to the whole thing, he gently replied,
âJust go! Whatâs the worst that can happen? If itâs not working out, come back in six months. Your role and your desk will be right here.â
That statement from Srinath was so assuring that I could think confidently and independently without the fear of missing out. After that conversation, things were very clear in my head. We switch jobs not only for new work, place or more money. We do it for the people, the amount of faith they have on us and the way to care about us.
I finally decided not to go although I was given the liberty to try the new thing out. I knew that I would learn and grow much more with people like Srinath around. It's been almost 3 years that I had this conversation and today when I look back, I feel good that I had taken the right decision back then :) Itâs the people around you that shape you.
