How I navigated a career transition from tech to my own business
3 years ago, I was wondering if I was crazy to consider leaving my tech career and comfy salary to begin at $0. I grappled with so many questions and uncertainty like..
❓ How can I make this biz profitable and sustainable?
❓ What's the backup plan if things don't go as expected?
❓ How to build a flexible career that accommodates family time yet is meaningful to me?
❓ How to maintain my financial contributions to the household without sacrificing current lifestyle?
Hand to heart, I can say with 100% confidence that knowing how to gain mastery of what I naturally do best with my strengths has empowered me with this transition. And StrengthsFinder gave me the language to name my strengths clearly and chart the next step.
It's been more than 2 years building The Strengths Co.
I've never felt more free, happy and fulfilled. I look forward to work and work feels like play. I'm not saying it's easy journey, but it feels really right.
My CliftonStrengths are “Harmony, Responsibility, Futuristic, Focus, Empathy”.
When I found myself questioning what step to take next, I ALWAYS found clarity when I look at it from the lens of strengths.
Here’s what worked for me: ⤵
1️⃣ I spoke to people who made successful transitions themselves, before reaching my own conclusion. This gave me clarity and confidence in my approach. (Harmony)
2️⃣ When I committed to going solo, failure wasn't an option. I built my website within a week and landed my first paying corporate client within a month. (Responsibility/Focus)
3️⃣ Figuring out exactly what kind of work will light me up. I feel most energized when I'm building personal connections and guiding people through growth. (Focus)
4️⃣ Building a personal brand on Linkedin that builds trust with my target clients by writing consistently on what I care about. I may be biased but my clients are truly the absolute best. (Empathy)
5️⃣ I had a clear vision in my mind: quality family time, location freedom, and teaching. This vision made me realise that only entrepreneurship can get me there in this season of life. (Futuristic)
⬇ TLDR, bottom line is:
Your strengths will always give you your highest chance of success. What worked for me (or anyone else) will be different for you.
If you've taken CliftonStrengths, what's your top strength? How could you leverage it for your career strategy?
P/S: Curious on how to turn your strengths into your own career strategy, join my StrengthsFinder workshop on 6-Oct. It’s the last run for the year. More details in comment below.
