If you have a job interview coming up and you don't feel confident because you don't have the perfect work experience, do this:
Use the weakness-before-strength tactic.
This tactic is used in politics and advertising to achieve 2 goals:
- Gain trustworthiness (which again builds authority)
- Neutralize the weaknesses.
Here's how it works, according to research (see Pre-Suasion by Robert Cialdini):
1. Reference your weakness (lack of experience) early in your communication, and you'll immediately be seen as more honest. This builds trustworthiness.
2. In the next step, use the words HOWEVER, BUT, or YET to take the listener away from the weakness to a counteracting strength.
Ideally, this strength also challenges the relevance of the weakness. This is how you neutralize the weakness.
Example:
I don't have the required 3 years of experience in field X; However, my experience in Y has equipped me to (Insert how you can solve their problems).
You've now mentioned your lack of experience and neutralized it with a strength that helps you do the job despite the weakness. This makes the weakness less relevant.
Researchers have found that when marketers first acknowledge a drawback and then highlight strengths, they see large increases in sales.
Apply the same tactic to your job interview.
