This is a nice #renewables infographic …BUT…
keeping aside the estimated values by source… the main thing missing is that this is about renewables #electricity ⚡️ and not renewables energy‼️

The issue is always the same … electricity is just a part of energy. About 75% of the energy we use is NOT electricity!

P.S. differently that the attention given by #media that tends to focus on wind 💨 and solar ☀️, bio energy is by far the renewables source n.1 but its main application is not #power but #transportation fuels and #heat

Electricity ⚡️ and #energy are not the same thing‼️
Less than one-fourth of energy we use is electricity.

An important reminder here from Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)

🔋 “The Age of Battery”? 🔋
What happened in California 🇺🇸 is quite symbolic with battery storage for the first one being the largest source of supply in one of world’s largest grids.

On the other hand there is a sort of alignment of stars for the battery sector:
👉 Costs of batteries have significantly plunged over the last year and all largest manufacturing companies signals a continuation of the trend
👉 Price of key metals for batteries have been declining significantly providing deflationary pressures
👉 A growing attention from multiple governments about importance of batteries both for EVs and for #power storage
👉 Demand is simply booming for EVs the sales have increased of almost 7 times in just few years; for power storage the growth trend is simply vertical
👉 #Innovation is going fast and faster, doing more with less as far as concerns traditional components, while new chemistries are tested and introduced into the market

Maybe the age of battery has definitely come…

At the begin it was oil ⛽️ the “black” gold..
Then #water💧became the new oil..
The digital 🖥 era made #data as the new oil…
Finally the clean #energy transition makes critical minerals as the new oil…

Actually all of those are well established “golds” but the clear emerging one in open debate are the critical minerals and their deep interlinkages with a sustainable #future.

The chart below 👇 gives a quick and very effective snapshot of the deep interlinkages between several clean technologies and many critical minerals.
What the chart does not immediately returns is who owns the #leadership in such critical areas…

And here, once again unsurprisingly, the big winner by far is China 🇨🇳. Size matters, but the red dragon has been able to put itself in the lead for most of modern clean technologies that are the backbone of a cleaner system. In parallel, #China has made the homework seriously and got a quite dominant position in access to raw materials and associated #production.

Taking just the first three ones mentioned in the chart (and fundamentally important in basically all #greentech):

👉 Steel: China is the world’s leader and meeting alone almost 60% of global production (with the second country in the ranking, #India 🇮🇳, having one-tenth of its output…).

👉 Copper: here Chile is the largest producer, but China is still on the podium on the 3rd place.

👉 Aluminium: another China dominated sector, making over 55% of global production and again the 2nd has a production less than 1/10 of China.

The list could continue…

It is evident that such trend matters today and will matter even more in the future should the deployment of new clean tech accelerates throughout the world. Energy security, industrial policies and #jobs creation might get even more interlinked.

And it is quite an interesting paradox that the destiny of clean energy transition might largely hinge on a traditional sector like…. Mining ⛏

A great chart on progress of solar ☀️ and wind 💨 #electricity ⚡️ by country. Improvements have been massive and relatively quick, still a lot of work to do for bringing that share much higher than today’s level, averaging around 10% of total #power needs

This is a VERY VERY VERY educative chart ‼️
it is so because it shows in a very clear way something that it is too often forgotten in the debate: while all the attention focuses in most of cases on the so-called “Majors“, the vast bulk of the #oilgas is in the hands of someone else.

And this chart - taken from the newly released IEA's Oil and Gas Industry in Net Zero Transitions Report and slightly modified - shows it with no risk of misinterpretation.
The “famous Majors“ - such as Exxon, Chevron, BP, Shell and others - hold less than 13% of global oil and gas #production & reserves. Only 1 out of 8 drops of oil or molecule of gas produced in the world comes from those companies.

So where the other 7 out of 8 comes from? Most of those are due to National Oil Companies such as Saudi Aramco or Gazprom or Qatar Energy that account for more than half of global output and close to 60% of oil and gas reserves...
