Ever wondered why the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans don’t seem to mix?
It’s a fascinating phenomenon rooted in ocean science.

Where these two oceans meet, like at the tip of South America, they don’t immediately blend due to differences in water density, temperature, and salinity. These variations create a sort of ā€œbarrierā€ that keeps each ocean’s waters distinct.

This separation is visible in some places as a stark line where the darker, denser Atlantic meets the lighter, less salty Pacific.

Ocean currents and winds eventually mix the waters, but it happens very gradually over large distances.

So, while they do eventually blend, the oceans retain their unique qualities for miles. It’s a beautiful reminder of the complexity of our planet’s natural systems!

Scientists are Converting Cars to Run on Invasive Seaweed.

Invasive seaweed, which often disrupts marine ecosystems and damages biodiversity, is being harvested and transformed into fuels like ethanol and biodiesel.

Researchers at The University of the West Indies in Barbados have developed a conversion kit to transform gas-powered cars to run on biogas made from invasive seaweed.

Sargassum algae, a major problem for tourism, has cost hotels in Barbados millions to manage.

The team found a sustainable solution by combining rum distillery wastewater with the seaweed in a bioreactor, which produces biogas for fuel.
