I think I had it wrong. When I asked people about working from home, I asked the question: are you more productive at home or in the office? After spending a week in Optimizely offices in Stockholm, Amsterdam and Berlin, I think I should change my question to: are you learning more at the home or in the office? On my trip it was very apparent to me that learning happens over lunches, across desks, listening to others in the office, by serendipity, and on whiteboards. I learned a ton. Like many companies in tech, we have hired many new employees this year. Their learning path depends on managers and other employees. And not just the new joiners, everybody learns through unstructured interactions. If managers and employees come to an office and spent all day locked in an office, then we don't need offices but if they engage, share and listen, it will make a big difference to the overall performance of the company. Let's not look at an office as just as a space for work, but also one for learning. I keep learning.
