Many of you have been so nice to ask how the first month at Alto has gone, so I thought I would share a couple of the top takeaways. Overall, I’m loving it and inspired by the importance of the work we’re doing to build a better pharmacy. There are a few things I knew or suspected to be true, but are even more extreme when you see them in-person every day:
Healthcare is even more broken than you think and it’s hurting real people every day - We all know our healthcare system is broken from seeing the statistics and trying to navigate it for ourselves and our loved ones. But seeing tangible examples everyday of big corporations putting profits and bureaucracy ahead of people’s health, as well as the real harm it then causes people who then can’t afford their medicine or are forced into other unhealthy situations, is enraging but also inspiring to try to be a part of the solution.
The Alto team is as committed to their mission and customers as any I’ve seen - I’d like to think I’ve been a part of some benchmark examples of putting customers first, but the Alto team is as committed as any I have seen. In just one example, Chris Valentin recently spent five hours driving on a vacation day to get medication to a customer who was about to leave on a year-long trip the next day.
The business opportunity is even bigger than the huge pharmacy industry - The U.S. retail pharmacy industry is about a half-trillion dollars, which means there’s plenty of room for Alto to continue to grow rapidly for many years to come. But my encouragement to the team has been to see the even bigger opportunities of using the platform and relationships we have built to help people live healthier in additional ways.
Thank you for the support and excited to share more updates as we go!
