I’ve talked to 50+ people in the last 4 months who manage ~$80B in assets/ run unicorns/ are at the very top of their fields. Here are the different behaviors among the top 1% vs. 0.1% vs. the 0.01%, that I’ve observed:
🤔 The Top 1%:
👉1) Experts at pattern recognition: They identify patterns everywhere + optimize to squeeze the max out of each of those patterns in life
👉2) Intense conversationalists: These people get straight to the point, can intimidate with their intensity, and easily gauge what you want from them in the first 5 minutes.
🤔 The Top 0.1%:
👉1) Are selectively stubborn: they change their mind when challenged with a compelling argument- but hold their ground even if a highly acclaimed source gives an argument that’s even slightly non-compelling
👉2) Introverts with social stamina: Only 3% of these folks are loud extroverts- most are introverts who carefully assess when to expend social stamina
👉3) Extreme optimization in organizational efficiency: Coordinating with them + their team is a pleasure. Everything in their life moves like a well-oiled, monstrously efficient machine.
👉4) Speak multiple languages (and I don’t mean languages like French/ German/ etc): They talk to engineers in the language they understand: numbers and bullet points; talk to ex-consultants in frameworks and structures- and so on. They reduce friction in conversations and seamlessly make “language” switches
🤔 The Top 0.01%:
👉1) Don’t delegate boring work: They manage a lot of paperwork/ “monotonous” work and know multiple details before they delegate. No one can bs their way out of things around them
👉2) Extreme compartmentalization: 1 conversation I distinctly remember is with a guy who took my call while dropping his daughter off at school and was headed straight to a board meeting from there. I saw 3 sides of him in 15 minutes: the fun, loving side with his family- the patient, focussed side with me and my questions- and the meticulous, intense side with his next board meeting. Extreme, seamless compartmentalization.
👉3) Absence of the “high horse”: The busiest, most accomplished people always seem to reply fastest. And they’ve helped me even when I had nothing to offer them. None of the truly successful ones have egos, they attract immense goodwill by helping out selflessly.
Hope this helps anyone looking for an honest review! And it’s a nice, sunshine-y Sunday over here: sending hugs your way if you need them today!
