Promotions are milestones in our professional lives. They are not just recognition of our hard work, promotions also mark progress in our careers. With the help of LinkedIn's Economic Graph team, we looked at where people are being promoted — in their jobs, industries and cities. The findings can be found in the latest edition of #GetAhead. It’s our hope that these data can help inform your career choices, including which skills seem to help people get an edge over others within their organizations.

Should you consider a job at a startup?

Startups are often seen as tech- and youth-obsessed organizations. But, a look at this year’s #LinkedInTopStartups shows that these employers offer a diverse range of opportunities. Many of these jobs offer flexible work options, for example. Also, while many of the job ads at these startups are in the tech industry, you can also find jobs in customer service, finance, regulatory administration, sales and much more. I take a look at the data in a special edition of #GetHired.

How do you define abundance and wealth?

I recently had the chance to sit down with Dr. Deepak Chopra to talk about his new book Abundance: The Inner Path to Wealth. One of the things that struck me is that the guide and practices he includes in the book could be great exercises for job seekers as they try to find what makes them happy. If given the option, many people would pick money as their ultimate goal, but that will rarely make people happy and fulfilled. Dr. Chopra asks people to broaden their definitions of wealth.

Check out all of his suggestions in the latest edition of #GetHired.

What are your thoughts on career second or third acts?

Julia Child has always been present in my life. I grew up with reruns of her shows on my local public TV station. Then, of course, her appearances on talk shows. Now, we get to enjoy retellings of her life on the big and small screens. I talk with the team bringing her life to HBO Max’s Julia for the latest edition of #GetHired to find out what we can learn from her career’s second act.

How can you guard your career while navigating economic uncertainty?

Labor market measures are strong. Yet, a lot of people — and businesses — are understandably worried about the future. Inflation is up. Headlines about layoffs and hiring freezes are popping up. Some economists are also warning of a potential recession. While you may not be able to do a lot about all of those issues on your own, you can prepare and put your career on a better footing if the worst happens, such as layoffs and furloughs. We revisit some past advice in the latest edition of #GetAhead.

Should you send thank-you notes after job interviews? In my opinion, it depends. About two-thirds of LinkedIn members say in a poll that they think you should send them, though. Why? Well, I dive into their reasoning in the latest edition of #GetHired. The main things to know are that:

📝 Thank-you notes won't make up for a lack of skills or experience.
✨ Thank-you notes can act as a polite reminder to the hiring team.
🕒 Thank-you notes are low risk and quick tasks

How do you negotiate a job offer without being cold or overly aggressive?

I had no idea how to negotiate a job offer when I entered the workforce. The result was several years of being underpaid. One of the obstacles I faced was that traditional negotiation advice requires people to be cold or unfeeling, but that's not a good way to start off a working relationship. Fortunately, Mori Taheripour, who is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's The Wharton School specializing in negotiation and dispute resolution, told me on a recent episode of my podcast that bringing your humanity to negotiations is important. I highlight some of the many lessons she shared with me in the latest edition of Get Hired. Check them all out and more at the link below.

What’s your advice for people looking to find a new hobby?

If you’re like me, finding a new hobby doesn’t come naturally. By design, I tend to gravitate toward spending the bulk of my time working on things related to my job or profession. While not necessarily a bad thing, there are so many benefits to having a hobby or passion project. So, I asked LinkedIn members about their hobbies and how they found them. Check out all of their suggestions in the latest edition of #GetHired.

What advice do you have for people struggling to accept or reject a job offer?

People should be looking for the right job, but it doesn’t mean the position they get will be perfect. I talked with Lindsey Pollak for the latest edition of #GetHired.
