I am a first-generation lawyer. In fact none of our distant relatives or family friends have any legal background. When I took up law, I had little idea about the hurdles that are faced by those without a parent or an uncle in a legal chamber.
While I was sending out multiple applications every semester for an internship, I saw my peers with legal background completing internships after internships in reputed legal offices because of ‘contacts’ and ‘references’.
Yes, it is disheartening to have to put in your all while someone else gets it served on a platter. However, looking back, I am certain, I would not want it any other way.
There is no greater pride and joy than to be know purely on the basis of your merit and work and to build connections solely on one’s own name. If you are a first-generation lawyer without any contacts and references, give yourself a pat in the back and remember you’re already a step ahead.
