To celebrate 6 months of not getting fired from Blizzard Entertainment, let’s talk about my imposter syndrome! 🎉

I’ve always struggled with having a sense of belonging - and a part of me assumed getting my dream job against all odds would fix that.

Not a lot of people can switch to a brand-new and highly competitive industry, without a referral, after getting rejected from about 30 jobs in a row. So that has to mean I did a great job selling myself, all the certifications I achieved paid off, and all the interview practice I got during my job search must have helped right?

…Right?

To my disappointment,  that sense of “you don’t deserve to be here” didn’t go away on my first day. Or my first week. Or my first month.

Finding people to relate to was very difficult. Even though many of my coworkers were also new to gaming, they came from other top companies like Google, or Amazon, or Marvel. I came from a dinky company of 100 people and my side hustle was trading social media tips for haircuts from salon owners on Groupon.

But, having a lot to prove is something that has made me excel. I have continued to use these feelings as a motivator to seize every opportunity possible and keep growing.

Learning and accepting that people value my input and actively seek my opinion has been a very difficult journey. I’m very lucky to be working in a place where so many people along the way have really helped me believe it.

Have you ever been curious about what kind of swag you get from 9 months of working at Blizzard Entertainment?

Here's about 75% of it.

Where else do you get kits that consist of statues, art books, tarot decks, kazoos, light-up keyboards, pillows, plushies, figures, slides, lunch boxes, and much more?

What's the coolest piece of swag that you've gotten?

It's not every day that you get featured on the the*gameHERs awards! 🏆🎮 And added to the list of things that I never thought would happen in my first four months in the gaming industry.

I really am so grateful to have been a part of this ceremony with some of the greatest and most influential women in our industry.

Thank you so much to Leonie Leonard for inviting me, verta maloney for really making something amazing, and Carlos Cribeiro for doing such a great job producing the segment.

You can watch my segment on the*gameHERs Twitch channel. I come in around the 48-minute mark.

The worst part about burnout is the wave of guilt that comes after it.

I don’t come from much. I've had to work very hard for everything I have - which means that every chance I get is quite precious.

The past few months have brought more opportunities than I could have imagined - from awards, to speaking engagements, to mentorships, to some very cool work projects.

Unfortunately, there can be too much of a good thing and I’ve experienced the consequences for the last few weeks.

Burnout can be a very vicious cycle.  The things required for me to get over my burnout made me feel guilty, and stressed me out more.

I knew I needed a break, but being unproductive made me feel anxious. I tried to focus on things that would bring me joy, but my mind was fixated on my perceived laziness.

Unfortunately, if you don’t stop yourself your body will stop itself for you.

After a week of bed rest, I’ve moved past the shame and am rekindling my passion for creating. I’ll still be here but moving a bit slower.
