Small, family-owned Kirana stores sit at the heart of Indian communities.

But keeping shelves stocked isn’t as easy as it sounds. Store owners have to rely on visits from sales reps or leave their shops unattended – and risk losing business – to buy products from wholesalers.

Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has developed a solution by way of the revolutionary Shikhar app. It connects small-scale retailers directly to HUL, so store owners can place orders 24/7. The app also gives them access to a range of resources, including credit facilities, personalised product portfolios and relevant trade promotions.

Because of this, 1 million retailers have now gone digital – helping to maximise their sales potential. This app now covers around a quarter of our general trade business in India. Driving growth for retailers. Driving growth for Unilever.

Plastic has its place, but that place is not in our streets, rivers or oceans. Our plastic is our responsibility, and our starting point needs to be in design, reducing the amount of plastic we use, and in making sure that what we do use increasingly comes from recycled sources.

Today, we’ve committed to halving our use of virgin plastic, which we will deliver in two ways: we will altogether remove more than 100,000 tonnes of plastic packaging, and we will accelerate our use of recycled plastic in our packaging. And to make sure that plastic waste doesn’t get into the environment and we really achieve a circular economy, we’re also committing to collect and process more plastic packaging than we sell. All these commitments, we will deliver by 2025.

We all have a part to play - designers, suppliers, manufacturers, partners, consumers. The decisions we make will be fundamental to eliminating plastic waste. Only by working together can we close the loop on plastic.

That’s exactly what our brands working in this space are trying to address – they’re creating experiences where people feel safe, valued, and included.
