Happy Holi!

The vibrant Hindu spring celebration comes round once again.

Tradition states that Holi is the start of the new season, and I think this is very fitting given where society is right now and where we hope we are heading!

As a little girl from the East End of Glasgow I would never imagine that at 50 I’d have accomplished my wildest dreams 💫

The road I have travelled to where I am today has by no means been a smooth one - it’s been full of diversions and bumps along the way and each stage of my life has brought with it many challenges.

Despite the many setbacks I’ve pulled myself back up and now I have all I ever wanted and more.

I still pinch myself that I have an OBE next to my name! But then I remember all the hard work it took to get me here, and remind myself that I deserve it.

No matter the challenges you face and how dark life gets, just remember to keep moving forward and one day you will look back and it will all be worth it! 💕

As many of you know, I used to suffer very badly from low self esteem.

When I started to get more confident, I wanted my look to reflect how much better I was feeling.

I got tips on how to do my makeup and started getting my hair blown out a couple of times a week, just to go to work. It made me feel amazing.

Some people might be thinking: it’s just makeup and clothes, what does that matter? Well, for me, it was a rebrand. Looking a certain way empowered me to take my business to another level.

To be a success, you have to feel like a success, too.

Growing up, I would tell people about my dreams of starting businesses.

I can’t tell you how many times I heard: “You’ll never get out of here. You need A-Levels. Get a normal job.”

But I didn’t want to do fine, I wanted something more.

Which is why whenever I announce some career progress, it’s that little bit sweeter.

It’s a moment I can cherish, disproving my doubters. And in a way, of disproving my own doubts.

I’m glad to say there’s been a few of those days.

Today is not just one of them.

Today is Youth Mental Health Day ✨

It’s really important to acknowledge that the world can be a very stressful place, especially given the last year, and especially for young people who have felt isolated from their friends or from school.

#YMHD aims to get young people and those who support them talking about mental health. It more important than ever to get people opening up the conversation and breaking down stigmas around mental health 💜

There is nothing more satisfying than learning something new.

It spurs us on, fuels our inner flames of curiosity and motivates us to keep learning more.

Even so, it can be incredibly frustrating when we want to find something out and we can’t find the knowledge anywhere.

We can all remember spending hours in a library desperately searching for that one date or fact that would complete our work and failing.

I think that there’s a key learning here:

It’s better to live with a good question than a bad answer.

We benefit more from holding onto our curiosity than settling for an incomplete answer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In life, we get dealt many challenges.

And if the past year has taught us anything - it’s the value of health and the importance of family.

My brilliant mum was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and if it wasn’t for the dedicated and hardworking team at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust she wouldn’t be here today.

Thank you to all of those who give their time, so we can spend more time celebrating life with the ones we love most 💕

Make sure to check yourself, both men and women–and if anything seems off, go to your doctor to get it looked at.

Slightly late to the party, but I’m finally recovered and fit enough for my first COVID vaccine 💉

Thanks so much to the fantastic NHS and everyone involved in the roll out of the vaccines across the country 💕

And a special shout out to my wonderful nurse Claire - you were amazing!

After suffering with COVID earlier this year, I’m so grateful for the vaccine and hope that everyone who is able to, will get vaccinated 🎉

Glasgow’s East End will always have a special place in my heart - the people are what make it so special.

Caring and generous, they would happily give you their last drop of milk even if it left them short. These people have taught me true value, that no money could ever buy - kindness 💕

Although I have gone down a different path, I will never forget where I’m from and those who shaped me along the way 💫

Finding things difficult, aged 24, fresh out of uni, is 100% natural.

As you grow older and more experienced, you will see that learning new skills becomes progressively less challenging and easier to complete.

The truth is this:

These jobs didn’t become easier, you got better.

Smarter.

Wiser.

More experienced.

More independent.

Don’t undervalue how hard things are when you start, because otherwise, you won’t be able to truly feel proud of yourself when you improve at them!

Today is International Women’s Day, one of the most important days on the calendar.

It’s the day that the international community comes together to recognise the gender gap and celebrate all the astounding and powerful achievements that women have accomplished in the last year.

The campaign this year is centred around the theme of challenges, and I couldn’t agree more with their choice.

We have all seen how the traumatic events of the last year have disproportionately impacted women, be it through homeschooling or through higher-risk jobs that women tend to fill. For this reason, the idea that this is the year we actively challenge society to fix these inequalities is very poignant and fitting.

2020 showed us all that communication between colleagues does not have to happen in meetings.

In fact, there is a very strong argument to suggest that meetings are completely superfluous! A well-structured email with concise bullet points can be more productive and efficient than a 1:1 meeting with a colleague.

It would be faster, easier and wouldn’t take time out of the other person’s day.

Business has long relied on being in a meeting room and having everyone present for this.

With new technology like Loom and Slack, this is definitely changing, probably for the best!
