The right way to ask for a referral on LinkedIn.

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.
𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆.

That is why messages get ignored.

Here is a simple, respectful way to do it.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭:
Search for your target company on LinkedIn.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮:
Go to the People tab.
You will find employees and often your college alumni there.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯:
Send a connection request first.
No resume.
No long pitch.
Just a clean intro.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰:
Once connected, check for relevant openings.
𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲.
𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗜𝗗.
𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸.
Politely ask for a referral.

That’s it.

Two small things that make a big difference:

→ Never send resumes as DOC files.
Convert to PDF, upload to Drive, share the link.

→ Write everything in one message.
Multiple follow-ups feel like spam.

Referrals work when you respect the other person’s time.
𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿.
𝗕𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱.
𝗕𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹.

That alone puts you ahead of most applicants.
