Hydrogen research pioneer since 1979

For decades, we have been a pioneer in hydrogen technology, transforming the way we think about locally zero-emission driving. Here are some of our key milestones:

1979: BMW transformed a 520 model into its test vehicle powered by liquid hydrogen.

2000: Based on the 7 series the first small-scale hydrogen car series launched on a “CleanEnergy World Tour,” showcasing early hydrogen mobility.

2014: The BMW 535iA Hydrogen was developed to highlight zero local emissions, sporty performance, driving comfort, and long-range capability.

2023: A pilot fleet of BMW iX5 Hydrogen vehicles was deployed worldwide for testing and demonstrations.

Did you know that charging-optimised routes are one of our most sophisticated digital features? Up to 19 vehicle, infrastructure and user preference parameters are taken into consideration when calculating the best journey, such as:

⛰️ Topology along the route
🚗 Vehicle mass
🔋 Preferred battery level at destination
🔄 Every 60s: Update on battery status and station availability

We've been first movers with introducing the feature back in 2020 and continiously improving the service ever since.
