Spiraling towards climate chaos

This transfixing visualization from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration shows over 140 years of monthly annual temperature observations.

The signal of human-caused global warming became apparent decades ago, and now we are racing towards an ever more hostile and unfamiliar climate.

Global average temperatures now exceed 1 C over preindustrial levels and are on track to regularly exceed 1.5 C in several short years.

We need an all-hands-on-deck effort to stop this chaos. Governments, financial institutions, corporates, NGOs, and citizens all have roles to play in preserve a livable climate.

It’s official! Singapore is implementing mandatory climate disclosure aligned to the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)!

The Asian financial hub’s requirements will start with listed companies in 2025, followed by large, non-listed companies in 2027.

Listed companies are required to report on Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the first year, and on Scope 3, or value chain emissions, in 2026, and to obtain external limited assurance on Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions two years after beginning reporting. A similar timeline is foreseen for large, non-listed companies.

Further guidance may be forthcoming on SMEs.

Great to see Singapore’s continued support in this space!

More governments and companies are making net-zero commitments, but those decarbonization targets must now be turned into tangible action. Net Zero Tracker’s latest stocktake report shows that net-zero has gone mainstream, but many pledges have been short on detail.

They recommend more clarity in the following areas:

-Setting emission reduction targets in line with the 1.5°C temperature limit.

-The use of offsetting claims.

-Fossil fuel financing within a net zero strategy.

-Defining equitable target-setting for communities affected by net zero transitions.

-Alignment of climate action with lobbying and advocacy via trade associations.

They also put together this super useful comparative guide on net-zero targets.

Check out new short-term climate scenarios and a scenario viewer tool!

It is a collaboration between United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) FI and the renowned National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).

We worked with UNEP FI's members and a team of leading economic modelers to develop a suite of new short-term scenario narratives that explore the different ways that the transition and climate change may impact markets, economies, and financial actors.

The report also discusses the use and need for short-term scenarios in addressing gaps in climate risk management processes and features a practical guide for using short-term scenarios within your institution.

The IFRS Foundation's International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) has done a terrific mapping between the new climate standard (IFRS S2) and the FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.

To make comparisons by pillar and disclosure easier, our team has put together the one-pager below that captures all 4 pillars and 11 disclosures. Hope you enjoy it!

🌍A global look at energy sector emissions and their annual changes!

As time goes on, emerging markets are accounting for an ever larger share of global emissions. They already represent nearly all the growth in emissions each year, as Europe and North America along with developed Asia decline.

This can easily lead to the conclusion that these EM nations need to clean up their acts and those in the developed world are already doing their part.

It’s a dangerous mistake. The road EMs are following now is one that the developed world followed in years past. It is in the interest of everyone that they follow a greener path. However, all people deserve the benefits of development too. So if we want to produce a greener world, we need to support policies that go beyond our borders and help accelerate transitions everywhere.

This is at the heart of the Paris Agreement and is captured in provisions for carbon markets, financing, technology transfer, and technical assistance.

On climate, let’s not forget, we can only succeed together! 🌲
