Career Motivation
Disrupted!

* Millennials and GenZers have unique expectations that drive job satisfaction. Leaders must understand their source motivators to win the #TalentWar.

* Employees motivated by #ExtrinsicValues (“old” measure) perform work to specifically earn rewards that are tangible and often monetary—pay increases, new benefits, bonuses, or promotions.

* Employees motivated by #IntrinsicValues (“new” measure) complete work because it is personally rewarding based on meaningfulness/impact, choice, flexibility, relationships, and balance.

The Temple University community mourns the loss of our beloved colleague, Officer Christopher Fitzgerald:

1. An all-Philly sports teams fanatic who proudly sported a Phillies logo tattoo on his arm;
2. A “sneaker head,” who, along with his wife, reveled in collecting the best “kicks” on the market; and
3. A dedicated runner, often logging 100 miles per week.

—-

Christopher Fitzgerald served as an officer for the Temple Police Department. He died, tragically, in the line of duty, the night of Saturday, February 18th. He was 31 years old.

Prior to Temple, Officer Fitzgerald served as corrections officer in Allentown, Pa. He also worked for the Philadelphia Housing Authority Police and the Sheriff’s Office before joining Temple in 2021.

Officer Fitzgerald loved his community and loved working for Temple. He was committed to serving and providing safety to residents and was particularly dedicated to stopping violence. As part of his membership in two running groups—Swagga House Run Club and Black Men Run Philly—Officer Fitzgerald would carry a ‘Stop the Violence’ banner to encourage young people to pursue a more positive life path. He counseled and mentored dozens of young people in his quest to build a more caring and responsible society.

Officer Fitzgerald graduated from Franklin Towne Charter High School in Philadelphia. Both of his parents, Dr. Joel and Mrs. Pauline Fitzgerald, are former Philadelphia police officers. Joel is currently Denver’s chief of police and emergency management for the city’s Regional Transportation District.

Officer Fitzgerald also leaves behind his beloved wife, Marissa, and their four children, ages 7 - 14.

My last interaction with Officer Fitzgerald included a passionate discussion about the urgent need to mentor young boys of color.

We will miss our beloved colleague, friend, and brother.

Is College Still Worth It?

* For 60+ years, a degree has been the leading catalyst for professional success. It has singularly represented the most significant criteria for job placement and advancement. An investment in college has consistently returned gainful employment, upward mobility, differentiated status, and competitive advantage. Employers won. Employees won.

* Today, however, tectonic shifts in market globalization, technological innovation, and economic conditions have created a crippling gap between employer needs and employee capabilities. The workforce is simply not equipped with the necessary skills and competencies to satisfy job expectations. These conditions have created a talent shortage—a talent war—that has seen the rise of alternative skilling and credentialing companies that threaten to disrupt the current college monopoly. As evidence of an impending provider shift, the venture capital community is doubling down on investments in the edtech sector—banking on the demise of college, as we know it, and the growth of alternative platforms for training.

* The future of work requires alignment with the future of learning. Will colleges respond to the call for change and adapt theoretical and applied offerings to market needs? Or, will colleges remain steadfast in a decades-old approach while new companies replace them in pursuit of a relevant value proposition?

Just released by Stanford University Press, my new book tackles these questions and recommends a call to action. Get it here: http://bitly.ws/tkby
