As CEO of a company with people in Ukraine, I wanted to share my deep concern about the tragic and shocking events happening there and give an update on how we are responding.

Our teams are working around the clock and our absolute priority is to support our people in Ukraine - altogether, we have 400 people working in the country and we are doing everything we can to help secure their safety in very difficult conditions.

We are also actively supporting initial relief efforts through our partners on-the-ground and are in close communication with NGOs like Save the Children and key UN agencies. I also want to thank GSK people in neighbouring countries who are doing much to support our Ukrainian colleagues, their families and others impacted by these devastating events.

As a purpose-led company we exist to positively impact health, with the unshakeable belief that all people should be treated with dignity, respect and humanity. We are not in the business of politics, but utterly condemn this unprovoked aggression and the harm being done to the people of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have shown so much courage and bravery and we hope that a peaceful resolution can be reached as quickly as possible.

We’ll continue to update our response as the situation is evolving rapidly, guided by our humanitarian principles and a focus on people – our own and those who need our medicines and vaccines.

Update 1 March 2022

Today we’ve taken the decision to make a £3m donation to the Red Cross’s Ukraine Crisis work. The Red Cross is working on the ground in Ukraine and bordering countries to fund food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter for refugees. We are also continuing to explore how else we can support, including options for additional donations of our medicines, vaccines and consumer products.
Today, I was delighted to moderate a thoughtful discussion between the Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google on several topics, including AI and health, at the UK Government’s International Investment Summit.

I’m an optimist about the UK and ambitious for its future in innovation and technology. In the Life Sciences sector, we have world class research institutions, vibrant biotech and tech companies and global champions like GSK. Uniting these successfully could be transformational for patients, industry and the economy – and now is the time for industry and government to work together closely to deliver on opportunities so we can both get ahead of disease and support economic growth.

A child under five dies of malaria almost every minute and almost half the global population is at risk of this devastating disease. At GSK we're proud to be rolling out the world's first malaria vaccine in malaria-endemic countries, and we're not stopping there - we're committed to continuing to develop new and innovative medicines and vaccines to protect children and vulnerable populations and get ahead of malaria together. And we know that innovation alone isn't enough to tackle the toughest problems in healthcare – so that’s why we collaborate with partners to increase access and strengthen health systems.

I was so proud to see some of this work first-hand in Kenya last month – from meeting with community health promoters who are breaking down barriers to healthcare access in rural communities to speaking with scientists who continue to pioneer important African-led research. All extraordinary people - hearing their stories and resolute commitment to delivering health impact at scale was so inspiring. Tremendous progress but still so much more to do. #WorldMalariaDay

It is overwhelmingly clear that together we can end the HIV/AIDS epidemic - we have the science, the tech, the talent, and the partnerships. And what really stays with me from this inspiring chat with Mitchell Warren activist and executive director at AVAC is that when we put people and their needs first – innovation happens. This is how we’ll get ahead of HIV together, for good.
Innovation from our industry has never been more exciting. But there are still inequalities in health outcomes both between countries and within countries and certain health conditions disproportionately impact marginalised and already vulnerable communities. That’s why we’re working to make sure our research includes the most impacted people and to find new ways to reach more patients. Hear about how GSK is approaching this challenge and the progress we’re making with Kimberly Smith and Maya Martinez-Davis
