This applies to everyone in business and in life.

No matter how “successful” you are on paper treat your team with respect and kindness.

Just because you are their manager does not mean you can yell at them due to your lack of happiness.

After 35+ years of working this is crystal clear to me.

A lot of us miss this when hiring new employees.

We look at their resume and gauge their capabilities during interviews.

However, their ability to make others feel at ease is always a second thought.
Someone who is easy to work with is an incredible value.

Ask yourself. Ask your employees.

Would you rather work with someone who is incredibly difficult to talk to or someone who makes you feel heard and gets the job done with you?

The answer is easy. Hire accordingly.

2001, no office, 0 employees

2023, 2000 sqft office, 40 employees

Have a vision and keep working hard at it.

It takes time to build something meaningful.

In April I signed what could only be described as the worst financial deal of my life.

It was also one of the best and most rewarding decisions I have ever made.

I am referring to my divorce agreement.

As one of the few female footwear industry founders, failure was not an option. Surrender was not an option. As the one child that chose not to enter the family business, but rather to start my own company, failure was not an option. Surrender was not an option.

Most women learn very early how to armor up. How to fight. In April, I chose to surrender and the result was magical.

Now, I had options. I decided to move to Paris France for a few months. I have never been more inspired. I am a better leader and I do better work. The work I have been doing is more creative and I am more productive. I am very happy.
I learned at 57 that there is power and victory in surrender, regardless of what society preaches.

There will be moments in life when you get to choose to surrender or fight. Take a breath and weigh your options. But know that the power and victory is in the choice, not the outcome.

I didn’t start my business until 32
I didn’t have kids until 36
I didn’t sell 1 million shoes until 45
I didn’t reach 35 employees until 53

Now at 57, I realize that all the advice I received along the way, especially regarding entrepreneurship did not matter.

I arrived here by following my intuition.

My advice to you is to trust your intuition and stay true to your beliefs.
