I had the pleasure of speaking with Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google & Alphabet Inc., last week. Sundar’s optimism for the future is infectious – we spoke about the possibilities that data and #AI represent to medtech, and how continually pushing to learn and innovate in groundbreaking technology will lead to solutions that can benefit patients, healthcare providers, and communities around the globe in ways we simply cannot fathom today. I could have kept the conversation going for hours – truly a highlight for me!

On this Thanksgiving Day, during a year that has been filled with ups and downs, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the immeasurable impact that Medtronic employees around the world have made to improve patients’ lives. I’m grateful for each and every employee who dedicates their time and energy serving our Mission to alleviate pain, restore health and extend life. Happy Thanksgiving!
Today, Medtronic announced our Fiscal Year 2022 Q1 results, and it’s clear that we’re hitting a new gear. With a renewed sense of energy and momentum, we delivered a strong quarter thanks to the efforts of our employees around the world who continue to deliver innovative solutions to patients and customers.

We shared a broader Medtronic story today: one that shows how our Mission keeps us focused on what’s important; how our operating model helps us better understand customer needs; and ways our evolved culture – the #MedtronicMindset – empowers us to get more products to more patients, more quickly. Take a look at this quick video for a few highlights following our #MDTearnings call this morning. #results
Gender equality is essential to a successful business. We are stronger when we have a workforce that represents our patients and customers — and that includes women, who make up 50% of the population. #EachForEqual #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2020

Exciting to experience the Medtronic Mobile Labs trucks that more than 5,000 healthcare professionals use each year to learn about our innovations. With 6 mobile labs now on the road, we can better support our customers and field teams across the U.S. by bringing the training directly to them. So proud of the team who is advancing the Medtronic Mission by reaching more clinicians and their patients in this new way.

Thank you David Roberts, John Liddicoat, M.D., Susan Robnett Haider, and the US Market team for driving this incredible program. Let me know if you ever need me to step in as a backup driver!

Today and every day, I’m grateful for the amazing mothers and mother figures in my life, including the many moms within Medtronic.

I attribute so much of my personal happiness to my wife, Stephanie, and my mother, Leslie. Our kids, Emily and Alex, would not be the wonderful young adults they’ve grown to be without Stephanie’s love and guidance every step of the way.

Thank you to all the moms out there for what you do each day to make the world a better place. Happy Mother’s Day! (PS: Alex must be standing on a step or something... he can’t be that much taller than me!)

In this season of Thanksgiving, I’m pausing to reflect on what I’m most grateful for this year. My health and family are always at the top of the list, but I’m especially grateful for Medtronic employees around the world, who work tirelessly to make a lasting positive change in patients’ lives. The Medtronic family continues to amaze me with their resiliency and resolute commitment to our Mission. Wishing you a happy and safe Thanksgiving and holiday season.
Honored to accept the prestigious Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award on behalf of everyone at Medtronic. I’m full of gratitude for our veteran employees that devotedly serve their countries, as well as patients around the globe.

Veterans and active-duty military members have an unparalleled ability to handle stressful situations, work under pressure, set priorities, and navigate complex challenges with a focus on finding solutions. Now and in the future, Medtronic will continue to recruit, retain, and support military and veteran employees in service to our Mission and dedication to patients around the world.

We were glad to host Governor Tim Walz, Brigadier General Juarez, Thomas Simonet, Kurt Johnson and the Minnesota National Guard to join us in recognizing this outstanding accomplishment.

This award means a great deal to me personally – thank you to our active and passionately engaged military members, Medtronic’s Veteran’s Employee Resource Group in the Twin Cities, and our employees around the world who made this exceptional honor possible.

Take a look at the custom notecards a Medtronic field sales representative sent me this week with our new culture norms printed on them. She also sent a note expressing her enthusiasm for the #culture changes we are implementing. I was so moved to get this surprise in the mail!

She wrote that we are sticking to our core values outlined in our Mission AND driving a more competitive mindset. I’ve been thrilled to hear this sentiment over and over from Medtronic employees since we rolled out the new culture traits. And I couldn’t agree more!

In pursuit of our strategic vision to be the undisputed leader in healthcare technology, we’re transforming our culture to reward big ideas, move with speed and drive results — always putting the customer and patient first.

As we wrap up our fiscal Q3, I’ll be connecting with our commercial leadership from around the world to identify reps who have modeled our new culture while making a noticeable difference in closing out the quarter strong — and I’ll send these personalized cards out to those reps.

I am very pleased to introduce our new Medtronic Chief Human Resources Officer, Matt Walter. Matt brings more than 20 years of global HR and business leadership experience, including the past 9 years at Medtronic. In addition to leadership roles in our corporate HR team, and several of our businesses, Matt most recently led HR for our Global Operations & Supply Chain.

His deep understanding of our company, people, and culture – along with his proven business impact – will help advance our performance-driven culture and elevate our position as a destination for healthcare technology talent. Innovation is a people-powered business, and I look forward to working with Matt to advance our strategies. Congratulations, Matt!
