I get asked this all the time, “what do you miss most about the military”?

The answer is simple

[CAMARADARIE]

A group of individuals—most from wildly different backgrounds—working together to achieve a common goal.

Under extreme conditions,

Immense amounts of stress,

And insurmountable odds,

We always found a way.

Someone always had your back.

It was one of the most liberating feelings in the world.

I miss it—deeply.

But I’m more grateful that I was able to experience that level brotherhood at least once.

Most will never know it.

Here’s to building something special with your people.

A not so gentle reminder that you have absolutely no clue what someone is going through.

Quick to pass judgment?

Stop.

Trouble being patient?

Do better.

Find it hard to be kind?

Fix yourself.

Happy Saturday, folks!

I worked with some of the most elite teams in the Special Operations Community—here’s what each of them had in common.

(1) Bonding beyond work

You have to know each other on a personal level.

- Interests
- Hobbies
- Family
- Values
- Likes/dislikes

Understanding what makes people tick helps you get the most out of them.

(2) Radical Self-Honesty

Great teams promote awareness and authenticity.

Weaknesses aren’t an issue so long as they’re out in the open.

Adjusting to each others strengths is easier when you know each other’s weaknesses.

(3) Strategic Discipline

On a team full of leaders, knowing when to lead is huge.

Clearly defining expectations keeps great teams moving forward.

When done right, this can look like a bee-hive.

(4) Total Alignment

Like pirates, a great team is democratic in nature.

Agreeing for the sake of agreeing is unwelcome.

Saying ‘No’ is part of the culture.

This is the only way to gain complete buy-in.

(5) Accountability

Fail to perform and find your belongings in a box.

That simple.

(6) Address Conflict

Great teams don’t have cliques.

Once a team is siloed, transparency becomes difficult.

Every team member has to be committed to addressing tension ‘Mano a Mano’.

CTA: Do an inventory. How does your team stack up?
