The DBT 3 Minds ✍️🏼

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) introduces the concept of three “minds“ to help us understand and manage our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. These three minds are Rational (sometimes called Reasonable) Mind, Emotional Mind, and Wise Mind. Rational Mind is logical and focused, characterised by an emphasis on facts and rational thinking. When we're in this mind, we use problem-solving skills without letting emotions interfere. While this mindset is valuable for making clear and informed decisions, it may neglect emotional and relational nuances, potentially leading to decisions that feel 'cool' or detached.

In contrast, Emotional Mind is driven by feelings and impulses. When we're in this mind we have passionate, creative, or instinctual responses that can feel 'hot' but often lack balance, making it difficult to think objectively or consider consequences. Wise Mind serves as the synthesis of these two extremes. When were in this kind, intuition, emotional understanding, and logical reasoning coexist in harmony. Wise Mind represents inner wisdom, allowing individuals to feeling 'knowing' and make balanced and thoughtful decisions by integrating logic and emotion. DBT emphasises developing Wise Mind to navigate challenges effectively while honouring both practical considerations and personal values.
