When applying for Data Analyst roles, if you come across a requirement of VLOOKUP, apply IMMEDIATELY

vlookup is outdated. Show them you're an expert by using this formula instead...

INDEX/MATCH

There are many advantages to using this formula instead.

- It's faster! You won't see many improvements on small datasets but why not use the most efficient way

- VLOOKUP cannot look left. INDEX/MATCH can return a value that is to the left of the lookup value

- INDEX/MATCH can handle both horizontally and/or vertically structured data

Prove that you are an expert during a technical test by showing off this formula instead.

Show them you know how to wrangle that data!

You learn a lot of SQL functions in courses.

Here are 5 SQL functions I use all the time as a Data Analyst

1. Aggregate functions - such as COUNT() and SUM(). Combine these with the group by function and you pretty much built out a pivot table

2. String functions - lower(), trim(), and concat() can help clean your data if it's a mess. Very helpful when building visuals!

3. Date functions - I probably use this one the most. Using date() or month() can help you create better date columns for analysis

4. Windows functions - Specifically the RANK() function is a great way to handle multiple rows of data that are unique to a person or id number.

PRO TIP: make sure your order your data correctly when using windows functions

5. CASE function - this will put conditional flags on your data so that down the line you can analyze trends. Usually, I would use multiple of these when creating flags.

There are many more but in Data Analytics, this is what I'm using almost every day.

You don't NEED a BI tool to become a Data Analyst!

Learn these two skills and then start applying ASAP...

Excel and SQL that's it.

After you are comfortable in those two skills, then start learning a BI tool of your choice WHILE you apply for data analytic positions.

Yes knowing a BI tool will open more opportunities but don't waste time learning everything before starting the long process of applying.

Start sooner, get a career sooner.

Then learn as you go.
