I know there is an urgency to attach “Senior” to the back of your job title like Senior Test Engineer, Senior Test Manager, Senior Tester, Senior Manual Tester, Senior Test Automatiom Engineer, Senior etc
But chill… before you attach Senior, let’s talk about how to take your Career Horivert medication to become a Senior!
I’d explain growing a career as either vertically or horizontally.
If you love titles, then vertical is your favourite and if you love acquiring skills, you sure an horizontal learner.
During the software testing career fair, I explained in details > https://lnkd.in/dk6-JwR
But the summary is:
Horizontal moves from intern to junior to intermediate to senior to manager level usually measured by years of experience.
Vertical moves from manual testing and documentation to monitoring and troubleshooting to automation to non-functional testing etc
This is not to say you are limited to only this two.
To move successfully across the ladder of your career, you should have moved at both horizontal and vertical, which is my Horivert medication
Horivert medication states that:
🚀 Draft a 5years Table
🚀 Under each year table, have what you want to learn for each year.
For example:
- Year 1: Understanding business requirements and translating it into user stories, acceptance criteria and testcases, then Manual Test Execution of web, mobile and api application, Bug identification and reporting, test documentation with G suite package, project and test management with Jira and confluence.
- Year 2: Year 1 + Troubleshooting and providing possible solutions; test coverage comprehensiveness, API test automation, function effectively under any testing methodology, developing test plan and effective test strategies, SQL managing, etc
Then you continue in year 3,4 and 5.
It’s all up to you to put under each year what you want to put but by year 5; the industry expect you to have atleast
- Project Management skill
- Manual Execution Testing for web, mobile, API skill
- Test Documentation Effectively
- Excellent Reporting
- Developer kind of Troubleshooting and solution providing
- Experience in developing test automation framework for web, mobile and API
- Develop healthy test automation script with sync to CI/CD pipeline and adequate monitoring.
- Monitoring of Production Logs and Reporting with sync in your Data team
- Performance Testing should be top-notch
- An experience with basic security testing tools.
- Led and Manage a team of Test Engineers
This list is not exhaustive but this should be in your doables if you have been in the industry for 5years.
🚀 Implement for each year.
With those skill set and 5years worth of experience in the industry, you can willingly add Senior to your Profile description regardless of your current job title.
