Days after the 26/11 attacks, a distraught Ratan Tata visited the families of the 80 Tata employees who lost their lives.

Losing a loved one is never easy, and Ratan Tata wanted to help them in any way he could.

He promised to fund their children's education and medical costs for the entire family for the rest of their lives.

Not only that, but the police staff and pedestrians who barely had anything to do with the Tata Group were also covered by his compensation.

Ratan Tata did not have to do any of this.

He could have,

➡️ Stepped away from the chaos
➡️ Released a simple public statement
➡️ Invited the media for more attention

But what he did instead was this:

➡️ Step up and help the families, and in absolute silence.

This is what being a leader is about—no lights, cameras, or acts, just genuine love, compassion, and empathy for everyone.

Money may earn you fame and respect, but it does not earn you love.

It is acts like these that do.

How important do you think it is to show compassion towards your team and all stakeholders in your business?

Uday Kotak retired after living the most glorious journey in the Indian business ecosystem.

Uday grew up in a large joint family, in a home with close to 60 people under a single roof.

He was always passionate about cricket and wanted to build a career as a batsman, even captaining his college team.

However, he was struck in the head during a league game; it took him surgery and several months of rest to recover, also causing him to lose a year of college.

After abandoning this dream and pursuing an MBA, Uday decided to launch his financial agency.

He obtained a small loan from his friends and family to launch his finance and bill discounting firm - the majority of this investment came from a close friend, Anand Mahindra.

Because of his assistance, the financial institution was given the name 'Kotak Mahindra.'

Uday offered low-interest financial help to commercial organizations like Tata's subsidiary, Nelco.

Compared to his competitors, Uday offered his customers reduced interest rates.

Finally, in 1985, he founded the Kotak Mahindra Group.

Almost a decade later, the business had diversified into investment banking, bill discounting, stockbroking, life insurance and more.

According to Uday himself, three principles led to his success:

1) He advocated for simplicity, avoiding banking products that might lead to confusion and risk.

2) When it came to banks, he made sure his customers exercised caution when borrowing money, advising them against taking too much and thus gaining their trust.

3) Last, he was humble and ensured that if the public trusted him with their money, he would take care of it well.

In September 2023, three months before his term expired, Uday resigned as MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank.

In the age of digital signatures and ghost-written documents, he served his resignation in a handwritten letter, thanking everyone for supporting him in this long journey.

Throughout his career, he was respectful and humble and let his actions speak for themselves —a true example of what a good leader should be!
