One of my clients lost 100K organic clicks last month.
Was that a fault of an SEO team?
Spoiler alert: Nope, it wasn't.
Here is what happened:
The client's traffic recently dropped for the pages that actually started to rank better last month.
Many pages that lost thousands of clicks are still ranking number one or recently jumped to TOP-3 from the bottom of the SERP.
The SEO team worked hard on creating high-quality content, acquired great backlinks, and worked on constant content updates. Which, obviously, resulted in getting better positions.
But for some reason, traffic went down.
Unintelligent CEO would blame the team for such performance, but a smart one will ask to dig deeper and find the reason.
In fact, after analyzing the performance of the pages and search queries, we've realized that even though we have top positions on Google, we've lost a lot of impressions for those pages recently.
And that's something that sometimes SEO teams can't control.
1. Volumes of the keywords could drop anytime, and people can start searching less for your target terms.
2. More companies start running ads targeting your keywords.
3. Google often randomly tests new snippets above the organic search results.
Here is what you can do to overcome these issues:
1. Find alternative keywords people are currently searching for.
2. If you're number one on organic search but still want to capture more leads, consider competing with PPC.
3. And stay calm if you see Google tests another snippet. There is nothing you can do to fight Google :)
