I became a VP today.

I’ve been scaling tech companies for the past 10 years. I've seen a lot. I've built a lot. I’ve learned a lot.

I’ve also been told that ā€œyou’ll have a hard time reaching Director level because you’re young and you’re a womanā€
I’ve had my ideas taken
I’ve had a mentor email me the night before a big presentation of my idea ā€œit might be better if I present this without youā€
I’ve had countless men hired over me
I’ve been called a pencil pusher
I was given 24k/person to hire my first team while male counterparts were given more
I’ve been told that I shouldn’t attend an offsite so I can be home with my daughter

As I enter the ranks that have always felt out of reach, I want to challenge every leader - if you can help someone stand in their power, do it. Give more credit, let your employee run the meeting, let your employee present their idea, give praise in front of your CEO, trust your employees to take bigger projects, and find ways to lift underrepresented groups.

Reach down. Lift and amplify those around you.

I’m grateful for the people in my career who have pulled me up (Kortney Osborne, Ryan Nelsen, Colleen Leonard, Emelia Schinke, SHRM-SCP)
