Tell me this isn't true 😂

Anyone else feel this way?

Imagine if the opposite were true... You land a new job (learn how https://bit.ly/36fWltD) and feel like you know how to do EVERYTHING.

You'll feel good for the first 3 months.

But after 3 months, you'll be right back on here, looking for another job.

Optimize for the path of growth & your future self will thank you 🙌.

During my freshman year of college, I thought to myself “I am so far behind my colleagues. People landed internships at EY, McKinsey & Company and I can't even land an on-campus job.“

My parents didn't know how to help so they would send me boxes of microwavable rice, ramen & individually wrapped seaweed; so I looked elsewhere.

I sought advice from a mentor of mine and she told me “Jerry - the fact that we're having this conversation tells me you'll be fine.“

Though I didn't know it at the time, what she was trying to say was that if I cared enough and gave it enough time & attention, then I would eventually figure it out.

I look back at this memory and laugh because what she said was true. I did eventually figured it out.

For those, who are currently grinding & struggling, let me tell you: you will be fine.

If you're in the US, then the fact that you're reading this on 4th of July means that you care about your career.
If you're outside the US then the fact you're reading LinkedIn during the weekend means that you care about your career.

You will be fine. We'll look back on this moment 2 years from now and share laughs.

Now for those in the US: enjoy your 4th of July & those outside the US: enjoy your evening & rest of your weekend.

Is it just me or does every “entry level job“ have a 2-3 year experience requirement?

The expectation that you have to start with experience is extremely discouraging for recent grads & professionals. (Do you need help? https://bit.ly/37Aj5FI)

Hiring managers & recruiters – please start making entry level roles, truly entry level.

Coming from an immigrant family, I didn't have a network or a fallback plan after college. For me, life after college was sink or swim. Here's my story:

❌Freshman Year: Rejected from my first job interview as a college IT help desk associate. No internship after applying to 20 companies.
❌Sophomore Year: Parents scraped together $4,000 to buy me a car so I can start networking in-person. Applied to 80 companies, networked with 60 professionals; rejected from almost every company. Landed first internship at Dell EMC.
✅Junior Year: Applied to 30 companies, networked with 100 people & landed fall, spring & summer internships. Became the first intern at Google from Babson College. Paid back $4,000 to parents (Thank you for believing in me, Mom & Dad).
✅Senior Year: Applied to 10 companies I had referrals at. Networked with 100 people. Interviewed at LinkedIn, Oliver Wyman, Accenture & more. Landed multiple offers and joined Google.

For those building their careers, learn from my mistakes. At the beginning, I kept applying and hoping I would hear from companies. Long story short: I never did. I only started hearing back once I shared my story with others, found people to invest in me and put in a good word.

Since then, I've never looked back.
One of the healthiest habits to cultivate: Taking nothing personally.

In your job search, you may face rejections, setbacks, or disappointments. (But if you need some help: https://bit.ly/37Aj5FI)

Remember, it's not a reflection of your worth or abilities.

Keep your motivation high and focus on personal growth. Embrace these experiences as opportunities to refine your approach and advance your career.

When I interned at Google, I thought this would impress EVERY recruiter and thought they would do anything to talk to me. Right? No, I was SO wrong.

Not only did it feel like I had to prepare a compelling answer for “Why wouldn't you go back to Google?“ but also I had to work just as hard as I did before my internship.

The only difference was that it took me two months to realize this.

For students who do have brand name internships, don't make the same mistake I did and let ego cloud your recruiting strategy.

For students who don't have brand name internships, you are just as competitive as your peers. Apply to the brand name companies. Network with professionals who will invest into you. Most importantly, do it with confidence like you belong.

Because you DO belong.

You got this.

Embrace the cost of entry on the job search journey.

I recall one interview where nerves led to an awkward response, knowing I wouldn't get the job.

But that experience taught me to prepare better, shaping my path today.

You too might stumble during a chat or networking, but learn from those moments.

Embrace mistakes and embarrassment; they propel growth. Keep pushing forward! (But if you ever need help: https://lnkd.in/eFdpiMdE)

Reminder that you don't need to check off 100% of the job description before you apply & network to a job.

In fact – if you match 100% of the job description before applying, then it might be a role that may not challenge you.

Apply (land your dream job here: https://bit.ly/3wGhXai) & don't self reject yourself.

Make internships COUNT for experience.

For me, I had to self-pay my college tuition, room, board & personal expenses because my family didn't have the financial means to pay for it.

So I worked 10 hours at my work-study job earning $12 an hour. As soon as I began to realize, $120 / week wasn't going to cut it, I shifted to landing my first part time internship earning $20 / hour (shout out to Gray Associates, Inc for taking a chance on me).

By the end of college, I worked 7 different internships, every semester. It beefed up my resume (get a free resume template here: https://bit.ly/3oSoEVq). It didn't add towards “actual“ work experience because I was still a student.

Internships are experience.

If you find yourself questioning whether these views are connected to potential job opportunities, you're not alone.

But, if you're not seeing any opportunities yet, don't be discouraged. Take it as a compliment—you’ve made yourself noticeable!

There's always more you can do! Instead of waiting, why not reach out to those recruiters who've peeked at your profile? Send a thoughtful, personalized message explaining your interest in connecting.

Remember, it's not just about being seen—it's about being seen and then doing something about it.

One of the most common questions I get now is “Why did you leave Google? You didn't like the free food, gyms, nor the people?“

A friend I interned with converted full time with me, but left Google after 7 months. I thought to myself “Why would anyone leave in such a short time?“

He didn't leave because of the free food, the gyms, & the office slides. He left because he didn't like his role.

After 6 months, he realized his passions did not align with his role at Google. It wasn't the way he wanted to grow so he left for a technical role at a start up.

I'm grateful to have learned I left my role because I was looking for an additional layer of growth that I didn't think I would get there. (Join our MasterClass: lnkd.in/gQCMavh)

Yes - the perks are great. The food was delicious (avocado toast everyday for breakfast). The gyms were great.

Perks aren't what keeps you at the job. The role is what keeps you there.

Entry level jobs shouldn’t require 5+ years of experience.

What can you do about it especially if you have no experience? Learn & create your own experiences.

Let’s say you want to become a software engineer. (Aspiring Software Engineers start here: www.bit.ly/37YCnBY).

Take a course in the field you want to be in (E.g. Python)
Call local businesses and see if you can do a project for them
Write down these experiences under a “Technical Experience” section on your resume

Always remember there is a path for you to land your dream job. You got this.

When you see this photo, what race do you see?

White? Asian? Hispanic? Hard to tell? Our faces may tell what race we are, but we're all the same beyond that.

This is a photo of my family (censored for privacy) and it pains me to check in on my parents to make sure they're safe.

Growing up as an Asian American, I was told to keep my head down, work hard & stay in my lane and good things will come. It's hard for me to share my empathy with recent events because of the little voice in my head telling me to “stay in my lane“.

I recognize that's so selfish for me to think that way because so many people are hurting. I can't begin to understand the impact it's had on so many communities.

The mentality of “staying in your lane“ HAS to change for those who were raised with similar values. We ALL need to show up for the Asian community right now.

Without any action, there will be no change & it starts with us. I don't have the perfect solution, but I'm starting with these

Who’s with me? 🤗

LinkedIn: This is Important!

The longest interview process I've had was SIX rounds (yes – all separate occasions).

- Recruiter screen
- Calls with team members
- Hiring manager call
- Take home presentation
- Department head call
- XFN stakeholder call

What happened at the end? The company decided to say I was too junior for the role.(if something like this has happened to you: https://bit.ly/36fWltD)

The job search can be costly to job seekers, this transparency is crucial.

I was rejected from a $1B+ FinTech company for not having an MBA.

A recruiter reached out to me asking if I'd be interested in the role.

I was interested so I agreed.

After 3 rounds, I was dropped from the process because the team wanted someone with an MBA.

Perhaps I wasn't experienced or qualified enough – I was only 3 years into my career.

But my mentor always taught me that degrees don't define success; hard work and ethic does.

Some companies just don't see that yet.

I don't wake up at 5 AM to meditate – I wake up at 10 AM.

I don't work 7 days a week – I work days that work for me

I don't listen to Gary Vee's podcasts while I Peloton before I drink my vegan-high protein-kombucha. I workout at my home gym.

As an “entrepreneur“, I feel this weird pressure to always be grinding – especially while I'm young.

“Hustle while you're young“ “Go after it“ “You can sleep when you're dead“

Nah.

I'll wake up at 10 AM.

I'll make my own hours.

I'll workout at my home gym.

Because this is my ideal life & I wouldn't have it any other way.

Peloton Interactive employees who were laid off – I'm sorry to hear what happened. I'd love to lend out a helping hand as you look for your next role.

To start – this is the resume I used to get 10+ interviews at top companies like LinkedIn, TikTok & more. Let's break it down.

Use a structured resume. You want your resume to be amazing – use tools like the one Jobscan offers.

Structure: I wanted the experience section to take up 80%+ of my resume space because I knew experience is what sells. Hiring managers & recruiters only know what you tell them.

Yellow: I created sub-categories under each experience to highlight the key skills required for the roles I was going for. For example – “Strategy Planning“, “Leadership“, “Business GTM Evolution.“ (Also is much better than having 10 bullet points w/o structure)

Green: Notice how I used varying verbs to demonstrate the skills I wanted to show: strategy + analysis.

Orange: Quantity. Your. Impact. I remember someone at Google telling me – “if you can't measure it, then how do we know you did it?“

Purple: Industry buzzwords. Show that you work in the space by using common terms used in your roles. It tells others that you're “part“ of the club.

Structure your resume like this and run your resume through a resume optimizer like Jobscan: https://bit.ly/3uJs40x and it also tells you what keywords you’re missing.

Once you do that, comment down your resume to share it with recruiters & hiring managers in my network.

I’m happy to announce you will get a job this New Year
Out of all the companies I “dreamt“ of working at, I always thought to myself that Google was out of reach for me right out of school. I went to a non-target school & didn't have a single referral.

I threw in a blank application with my resume because I thought this was never going to work.

I spent all my time networking for the consulting firms I dreamt of working at like McKinsey & Company.

Got rejected despite me putting in 10+ hours / week networking.

Come March, I received an interview at Google. Again, I thought “no way I'm going to progress forward.“

I got the final round and soon after, I got the offer.

Don't be the one to reject yourself. Because if you don't try, then the answer will ALWAYS be no.

Think bigger, try for the bigger companies. Because all you need is for 1 person on the opposite end to see the potential you have.

In the quest for finding the right job and pursuing a fulfilling career, let's strive to be the beacon of warmth and acceptance for others.

When we make an effort to welcome, truly see, hear, value, love, and support those around us, we create a world where everyone can thrive.

Small acts of kindness and genuine connection have the power to transform lives.

So, let's embrace the role of being that positive force in someone's life, where they find solace and strength in our guidance and support.

Together, we can make the world a better place by simply being there for one another, helping each other navigate the challenges, and celebrating success along the way.

The impact of COVID finally caught up to me and I recently reached out for help.

I felt like I had no reason to feel bad.

I have a job that allows me to work at the comfort of my home and pursue my passions in helping others develop & find their careers. I have no reason but to keep investing more of my free time because what else would I do?

I kept telling myself “There's SO MUCH more I can do. 30 minutes of my time could potentially change the way someone else thinks about their career.“

What I didn't realize is the tax it has on me. Between my work at Google and Wonsulting, I was working 80 hour weeks. After work hours on an average week, I would co-host 5 events, speak to 10 people & plan for the next thing.

The problem was I no longer was finding time to relax. Due to shelter in place, I can't balance my stress with my hobbies. No boxing, traveling or seeing friends & family.

I reached out for help and realized I need to prioritize my own mental health. Without it, I keep going without refueling my gas tank. To start, I'm spending more virtual time with my friends & family by playing & doing at home exercises.

I'd love to hear other suggestions on how you've been staying mentally healthy.
